Are you able to write letters or get letter during Basic?

We did in my day but that was long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. Still, I can't imagine any branch of the service blocking mail, inbound or outbound. Too many legal ramifications. Also, mail is and always has been an important morale booster.

We were required to write a letter home. But, that was when one used a stone and chisel to write.

Yes. Just limited to letters though. No packages (at least for Army at Ft Sill) at all, so no pogey bait from home.
