I really don't understand. I wish the Air force would implement a standard beret. I think the berets look nice and are more military-like than the patrol cap.

Let's see the list includes but not limited to the following:
1) Wearing a 100% wool hat in the summer is awful
2) No eye protect in the sun.
3) Maintenance on the beret is very time consuming.
4) Not everyone takes pride and the time to shave and shape it correctly resulting in some ugly looking berets.
5) Wool is itchy
There are many more reasons but that is a good start.

It's not easy to put on by feel; it would help if there were mirrors at the doors everywhere on base. A PC can be put on one-handed while walking. If that can be done with a beret, I haven't figured out how, yet.

I recall correcting an LTC who placed the rank insignia over the middle of his forehead. Moron. He didn't like it but not much you can do to a W5. :-)

It takes two hands to put the damn thing on. I don't need or want crew-served headgear.

I had one Beret like that that I carved on like Michelangelo until it was a work of art. Then I lost it. I had to start all over with the shearing and burning and moistening and creasing and kneading and STILL couldn't get the damn thing presentable. Now if you lose your hat you buy a new one. Mark it zero, next frame.
Some folks can pull off the beret look. Others look like they have a deflated sheep carcass on their head. I was one of the latter.

MAJ (Join to see), you took the words out of my mouth (crew-served headgear). I always feel like I need a mirror to wear the thing correctly. This is not to say that I'm against them as part of the ASUs or for those who's wear has a significance tied to them (SF, Airborne, etc). But if it's just headgear, make it simple!

Sir- I came into the guard from another branch of service. Was not fond of the beret. It took a lot of getting used to. I concur- crew served headgear! I will say however- when it is worn correctly it looks sharp! I never enjoyed wearing it personally.

It's hot, hideous, doesn't block the sun, it itches, and it's just not practical...

This basically sums it up short and sweet. Absolutely hate the beret other than for the specialties where it's part of the tradition and history like SF.

I probably shouldn’t comment since I am 24 yrs out of the Army, but I think GEN Shinseki should not have pushed for the beret for all around wear, especially when a soldier is wearing bdu/ocu’s as there is no inherent shading from the sun/rain. I would have preferred the garrison (c**t cap) over the beret for class A wear as indoors you could tuck it under your belt and sit down and it would keep it’s shape. However there was never a blue uniform version and since the Army subsequently went to blues over green Class A’s for office and non-fatigue duty wear, the black beret was all that was left except the blue service cap. I think blues are too formal and dressy and ostentatious looking for everyday wear, certainly not the equivalent of a civilian business suit with which my officer’s guide equated it.

I actually didn't mind wearing them all the time with our fatigues, BUT, they are way too commericial. Â Just like our slogan and emblem.

I could never get the right fold, or wear it proper. I looked like a pizzeria cook

Wear of beret should have remained only with those who had done something to earn it and would therefore take the necessary effort to wear it correctly with pride.

Because they're hot and sweaty when its hot. You get tired of juior enlisted soldiers wearing it [beret] as if they were chef boyardee. But the main issue, is they get hot in the summer.

The beret has no brim (sun block) and it is never the same shape on the head of each soldier in a formation (sucks on parade). I though caps were hot and smelly, but NOTHING is worse than a beret in the heat. You boys in the AF can have'm.

In my opinion, they are inconvenient. When you require two hands and a mirror to put on your head gear, and have to drop everything you are carrying, its not practical. On top of that, we found that when everyone was required to wear them, most did not know how. Several people walked around looking like they were either in the culinary arts or wearing a Scottish bonnie.
I agree with MAJ Fred Nace, it should have remained with the special operators (i.e. rangers, airborne) who have earned it. We finally went back to the field cap, but we are still wearing the beret for ASUs.

It is hot in the summer, and for those of us blessed with the requirement to wear glasses, when it rains it does not protect my face. It takes two hands to put on, you have to shave and shape it, there is not defined school of instruction on how to shape it or wear it. Head gear for the most part is to serve a purpose, these do not.
