I'm a reservist, and I just graduated from my tech school. I'll be going on active orders for training for about 7 months in a couple weeks. I've been told a lot of different things about BAH and I'm pretty confused on how the whole thing works.

I live outside of our 50 mile commute zone on base, and I am moving to an apartment (also outside the commute zone) where I'll have a lease. I'll be living on base while I train because of the distance, but I have no idea how this affects BAH. Will I be able to collect BAH while I train on base? Or is this not possible due to having housing on base/having no dependents/etc?

I'd really like to get some clarity but I haven't been able to find much help online.

EDIT:

I got an update - I called finance and they were able to help me out a lot, I'll leave the answer up for anyone with a similar question:

As a reservist on active orders, they will give me full BAH along with BAS for the entire duration of my on-the-job training. They'll have me stay in the hotel on base 5 days a week (along with one UTA weekend per month) and I'll go home on the other weekends.

If you live on base in either thevenlisted quarters or base housing you cannotvreceive BAH. Why not just stay on base instead of leasing an apartment. Thank you for your service.

That’s what I was concerned about. I just wanted an apartment because my base is really far from home so I would be able to spend some weekends back there. Thank you for the response sir.

May have changed, but back in the day for guvment to pay for hotel there had to be a Statement of Nonavailability of guvment quarters. At PSF, I stayed in the Cable Car Inn, made famous by QM's Streets of San Francisco when they needed a hotel for scenes. Actually briefly met Karl Malden there once. It was at the top of hill on Lombard, opposite end of Letterman gate and Liverpool Lils. No adequate quarters. Once I was put in VOQ at Fort Mason, in Marina District, which was the second floor of the FMOOM. Talks about handy!!

As a Reservist, can I get BAH while I'm on active orders without dependents?

If you are going to be living on base while training for the 7 months then more than likely you won’t receive BAH cause housing is provided. Why do you want to lease an apartment anyway?

SGT Eric Davis - As a reservist on active orders they are only giving me housing at the hotel 5 days a week. On weekends I have to go home, I was going to get an apartment so that I have somewhere to live during that time.
