I know life in the barracks is not as bad as it used to be (single rooms and such) but if i could, I'd like to avoid it at all costs. I just want to either live off base or on base non-barracks housing. What are the chances that there will be no room in the barracks or other scenarios that would bar me from living in the barracks?

Your chances of winning the Powerball lottery are better than getting on/off post housing as a single PFC

If you are single PFC you will be assigned to the Barracks. There is no incentive or requirement for the Army to otherwise give you BAH to live out in town. Nobody says "oh golly gee the barracks sounds great for me". Nobody wants to be there.

Barracks life is not all that bad and when I was a single 2LT I would have preferred the barracks (yes I lived in them when enlisted). No yards to worry about, driving distance to work and PT is short, and a living environment with my peers. When I was at FT Hood I used to have to leave by 0445 to make a 0630 PT formation. Grass is rarely really greener on the other side.

Thank you for your response. Honestly I am not too worried about life in the barracks. My problem is that I have a lot of expensive belongings and I cannot leave them at my parents house. I am not sure how I feel about bringing all my stuff to what is essentially a dorm room, if that makes sense. I hope it is spacious at the very least!

SPC Steve Irvine - This is genius, getting an off base storage locker. One of the reasons towards the end of my career I would not live on post is the firearms collection I had (before the boating accident). I think this is a viable solution to items the military frowns on being on post. SFC (Join to see) what do you think of enlisted soldiers having off post storage?

MAJ Byron Oyler I think that's a genius idea if you have important things. I also have to agree that you are much less likely to be robbed in your barracks than an apartment. Most of the barracks today have two rooms with locking doors, that share a common area of a kitchen and bathroom. Someone has to go through two locked doors to get your valuables.

SPC (Join to see) See SFC Boyd's comments above in reference to security in the barracks and off post storage locker. I think this is a much better option than hopes and dreams that a PFC will get something better than barracks.
