If you had the opportunity, would you apply for/accept an assignment in the Pentagon?

With the Army opening more assignments to align with the Broadening Opportunity Program, you may have additional career-enhancing assignments within our Nation's Capitol (or just across the river from).

Wrong question in the wrong sequence. The first question is not "should a Soldier apply for / accept an assignment in the Pentagon". The first question is "what are my personal and professional goals?". The second question is "what are the best jobs and locations which help me to accomplish my personal and professional goals?". The third question, based upon answers to the first two questions is "should I apply for / accept an assignment in the Pentagon. If a Soldier does not want the Pentagon and is assigned there anyway (a very real possibility) then my advice is to "grow where you are planted".

SGM Quick, if I had the opportunity to apply or accept a position at the Pentagon I would do so. As COL Smallfield mentioned, a position at the Pentagon would help in reaching personal and professional goals. I am always looking to broaden my perspective in the Army. I am currently enroute to JFC Naples, Italy and accepted the opportunity not simply due to the location but due to the opportunity it would provide me both professionally and personally. I fully understand that the Army will send me where they need me, but if I had the opportunity to broaden my view and perspective within BIG Army, I would accept fully and willingly.

As far as I am tracking, assignment to Pentagon is done either by application or by a review of your records, no happening upon this assignment. You must maintain your records and possess the quality or technical certifications they are looking for. Either that or apply listing those attributes. So, I believe that the question posed is correct.

CPT Weber, I am currently serving at the Pentagon and honestly, I was surprised to get the call. My branch manager read my file, had a working relationship with me already so he knew what I brought to the table, and thought it would be a great opportunity. I of course jumped at the chance always looking to get a new perspective of the Army. I tell those I meet not to. shoot it down because their buddy had a bad experience and bad mouthed it. You get out of what you put in, and meeting the people here (networking) is a reward unto itself. Remember that the Pentagon is all about policy and money. If you expect anything else you'll be disappointed but you don't need to have a finance degree to make it. Plenty of Captains here but your right, more iron majors and LTC then anything else. Talk with your branch manager and see if it's right for your job at your current stage in your career.

A few years ago I did accept the challenge and must say it was professionally and personally rewarding in spite of the traffic and congestion, etc. It was quite interesting to see the BIG ARMY and DoD at work.

Concur, the Metro once you learned how to navigate it was a pretty cheap and easy way to get around. You learn quickly that major sporting events (Washington Nationals) or special events in DC required additional planning to make traveling livable.

I live just moments away from the Pentagon, definitely Metro is the way to go! That is when Metro is functioning properly.

I worked on Bolling afb in southeast DC for almost 7 years and yes the traffic was horrible taking sometimes up to 2 hours to get 10 miles however the job was worth it!

You have to use the metro, or adjust your hours to accommodate the travel time. If you drive, you have to get to the Pentagon by 7am to beat most of the traffic. Alot of folks get there around 5-6 to work out in the gym or go running. While there, you notice most folks tend to leave around 1400-1500hrs. This will get you ahead of normal DC rush hour traffic. Knowing alternate routes helps as well. Sometimes the side streets can be a life saver.

The opportunity to see how "big Army" operates would be great. I am under no illusion that it would be hard work and very long hours. But I do believe the long term pay off would be good for a persons career.

I applied for the CSA SSG and made the first round cut, but when the finals came, they selected from inside the beltway. Dirty boot where the rubber meets the road folks just really don't have a chance. I wanted to bring actual relevant opinion and experience with today's Soldier to the strategic plan of the future. Guess it's to another combat brigade manning 15-01.

I served two tours in the DC area (one in the Pentagon and one on Fort Myer) and each time was an awesome experience.

Because of traffic, I wouldn't recommend living south of Springfield/Belvoir...I spent SO much time in traffic; thank god for Sirius!

MSG,

I stay in Alexandria on the Yellow line, I pay a lot more for rent than my co-workers do but I am home in 15 minutes while they spend 2 hours in traffic!

I live in Arlington. I pay more in rent but 20 mins home vs 1 to 1/2 hours. Well worth it.I am just down the road from the Pentagon actually.

Yah, traffic here can be pretty fierce. The area, however, is worth it. So much to see and do, most of which is free or at nominal cost.
