I have a friends son going into basic soon. It's been a few years since I've been in basic(1983) What are some things he can take or have at basic? IE pogey bait, or other suggestions. Thanks

3 days worth of civilian clothing. Prescription medications. Prescription glasses (if required). Toiletry items. That's pretty much it.

First off, I thought I was one of the only ones left that used the term Pogey Bait! HA! Love it! Second they really can not take anything... they should be given a packet from the recruiter with info in it; 3 days civies, small hygiene kit, glasses and scripts; wouldn't hurt to take it all in a large book bag to have room to bring stuff back in.... Other than that they just need to take their grit with them and leave the BS at home. Best of luck to your friends son!

Things have changed. I think I went to Basic with the cloths on my back, a change of underwear and a toilet kit. Then spent three days standing in lines and getting screamed at in lovely Ft. Jackson. Then on a bus to Ft. Benning.
Still don't like Ft. Jackson.

CPT Lawrence Cable - Yeah, not sure why they tell them 3 days of clothes... I took on pair of jogging pants, an extra pair of underwear/socks and that was it... they put you in PT uniforms the day your get there.

When I went to Navy boot camp the first day I was there they took everything I wasn't wearing and put it in storage. I was able to get it anything they took away back the day I was leaving boot camp.

PO2 Michael Leppelman - Same for USMC boot camp. We got our things back the day before graduation.
