ABC aired "Inside the Life of Presidential Candidate Ben Carson" ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jP1GM99cvcM ) which gives a brief history of his life. He has certainly never ran short of hurdles throughout his life and his career, so why does everyone continue to underestimate him in the Presidential race. He has now surged ahead of DT in Iowa, is tying him for 1st nationally, has polled in the top 3 for over a year, has quite possibly the largest grassroots campaign of all of the candidates and even out-raised even the RNC in the month of September (as well as every other candidate). Yet, the media continues to blow it off and exaggerate the success of their favorite billionaire tycoon. So, what's the deal? Why do people still think he can't win, when he's clearly showing otherwise?

I also wanted to attach this video of Dr. Carson speaking about his decision to run: https://www.facebook.com/RunBenRun.org/videos/ [login to see] 85197/

I believe the liberals don't want a conservative woman or conservative minority running, as that candidate would be able to remove their arguments about race and sexual inequality.

I certainly would agree, I think they've shown that pretty clear with all of the racist remarks they have made towards Dr. Carson.

The ONLY minority Republican candidate I would considering voting for is Colin Powell. Ben Carson is a rambling fool who make illogical comments at the most opportune time. There's a difference between an intelligent person with common sense and one without. And Ben Carson is a person without any common sense.

TSgt Jaime Jones - I have heard poeple refer to his as not a real candidate. I don't the Carly Fiorina or Ben Carson are being looked fairly. I have heard both of them called not real candidate on MSNBC. I have heard many poeple say it's about time for woman president and the not mention Carly.

PO3 Dale S. - It unfortunate that poeple make that claim. I liked Herman Cain a lot also. Disliking someone politics does not make a racist.

I like Ben Carson. A lot. I most certainly would vote for him in preference to any of the Democratic or Third Party choices. I am convinced that he is one of the two smartest candidates in the race (although intelligence has never been an important attribute in a President). He's smart enough to have learned a lot about world affairs and political processes in the past few months to have overcome his deficits in those arenas. I have but two concerns with Dr. Carson as a President: First his lack of executive experience. I had occasion during my career as an IT consultant to work with medical establishments including the Department of Health for the County of Los Angeles and discovered that medical practitioners aren't necessary the best organized leaders. Of course, my generalization may not apply to Dr. Carson but it's still an issue with me. The other concern is that he doesn't appear Presidential to me. He is very deliberate in his speech and the effect is a halting delivery (that comedians have been quick to jump on). My father, a very bright man, also spoke in a measured pace and some might have been fooled into thinking him "slow". That being said, for those of us in the military who have led or been led, we are sensitive to the appearances of leadership and Dr. Carson doesn't appear like a leader. Think of the best leaders and you will find generally that they are also very adept communicators. Think of Winston Churchill as a supreme example of the art. Listen to recordings of FDR's fireside chats during which he braced the nation for the tasks before them in struggling through the Great Depression and WWII. Think of JFK's stirring speeches, especially the one wherein he challenged us to send a man to the moon and return him safely to earth. Think of President Reagan demanding "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall." Now imagine Dr. Carson making any of those speeches. I can't see it. Can you? Sometimes a President's, a leader's, greatest moments are calls to action. Whomever takes the reins of government in 2017 will have to truly inspired Americans to make a great effort to overcome the malaise in which we wallow today. Can you see Dr. Carson making that call effectively?

CPT Jack Durish I hear the "leadership" criticism often. My issue with that is not only did he run a major branch of one of the world's foremost research hospitals, he was on the board of several companies, he designed a very successful nationwide non-profit that operates in all 50 states, among a lot of other accomplishments. He's got an overwhelming amount of leadership experience. That being said, Dr. Carson's strength is in knowing where his expertise is, and knowing where it isn't. A president that thinks they know everything (like our current one) is far more dangerous than one who's willing to look to his advisers for support on key issues. Quite frankly, that is another trait of Dr. Carson that I like. He stays informed on different topics, but has been clear to state that he would lean towards his top military advisers for answers to military issues, economics experts to craft his tax reform, etc. Some may look at this as a weakness, but if you ask me it's a strength. No one man is an expert in every field, and they have to be willing to work with others to be successful. The attitude expressed by Carson in his statement, "'If two people think the same thing about everything, one of them isn't necessary," I think exemplifies why I admire this trait in him.

Finally, he knows his position. It may or may not be a political stunt, but he has been continuously putting every day people at the head of his campaign. That, has led to much of his success in the campaign. He has an email set-up where anyone can send in questions and almost nightly, he makes it a point to answer them on his Facebook page. His campaign is constantly posting near daily updates to their supporters, he's on the ground with people every single day, and he comments as often as possible from the road. He has said on multiple occasions that his opinions, are just his opinions, and what he wants is for the American people to tell him what is important to them, not for him to tell them what they should think is important.

As far as his quiet demeanor, I don't see why that is so offensive to people. He's proven over and over that he can stand his ground on important issues, I don't see his ability to be calm and collected as a weakness, but a strength. He represents everything that people wanted to see from the establishment. People hate the establishment because they continue to turn out the same people every time, now people are looking at Dr. Carson's not fitting that establishment portfolio as a weakness.

As for him being able to inspire the nation, I have seen his success in this field already. Not only in the nation, but around the world. I've been working for his SuperPAC since July, and we constantly have former patients, coworkers, friends, acquaintances from all over the world (literally) trying to get involved. We've had people start their own campaigns doing "pass it forward" things by buying peoples lunch and leaving a "paid for by a Carson supporter" message, we had one volunteer have a family emergency and overnight more than $1000 was raised by random supporters to help them pay their bills. I constantly see messages from people saying one of a few things, "I have always voted Democrat, but I just registered Republican so I can vote for Carson" or "I haven't voted in X years but I will be voting this year" and from our senior members "I had given up, and was just waiting to die, but I am finally excited for a candidate again." So I personally have faith that he will be able to inspire the nation in a time of need. After all, he inspired his entire grassroots movement with a single speech in 2013... (Sorry for the novel, I love politics)

SPC(P) (Join to see) - I pray there is truth in what you write and I pray that voters will choose wisely. They haven't in far too many years. Our nation desperately needs a real leader. We haven't had one in far too many years.

Capt Seid Waddell - Yes Dr Carson makes very compelling statements for those who listen. Sadly, in the heat of battle quiet words of wisdom are often drown out of existence by the excited ramblings of fools. We desperately need a leader who can be heard and is saying things that need to be heard. I believe that Dr. Carson fills half of that bill. I'm not yet convinced of the other half...

CPT Jack Durish - Sir, this is an example of the types of things we hear from non-American volunteers of Carson... we get a lot from Nigeria because of his school of medicine there.
