Don’t volunteer to drive a dump truck unless you love pushing a wheelbarrow

Long days, fast weeks. You will want to quit, you will hit a wall, But if you suck it up and just focus on giving your maximum effort and stay extremely (falsely) motivated, you will earn the honor to be called a soldier. That’s the only advice you need.

AAAAHHHH Infantry. Well I will add this. They are right. They asked who could drive and end loader, gave the guys a shovel. Asked who could drive a back hoe, gave them a mattock (pick-ax), asked who could drive a dump truck, and gave the guy a wheel barrow. They dug a new slit trench! lmao so watch what you volunteer for!

Second, if you are having troubles getting something down, ask your team to help, or just say look drill sergeant I am having troubles with this can you please re-show me AFTER the class has stopped and they ask IS THERE ANY QUESTIONS! don't be afraid to ask questions.
If you are going to the Guard or reserves PAY ATTENTION in RSP! get the facing movements, the military time. the uniform and the boots will come later when you get them. Change socks often, keep your feet dry and if you cant CHANGE SOCKS when you can. ZIP LOCKS, use them, put your socks and T-shirts in them, keeps them dry. You WILL learn what your woobie is fast enough. Treat it right and it will keep you warm at night! and never, ever, never not pack your woobie! I will go with out an MRE before I would LEAVE my woobie ( poncho liner to the non Infantry types here that are saying what the hell is a woobie!) Keep you head up, eyes out scanning, learn your 3 general orders! thats a biggie. Warrior and soldier ethos as well. but those will be drilled into.

Wet weather bag, when you pack black(rubber) side out. When It is issued to you, put your head in it and look for HOLES, you see light ask for another one! Its your shit that will be wet if you don't! reason black side out, rubber repels water. the green nylon side will remain wet. if you have a hole you will see it on the inside and it will be wet, where as if you put it the other way you can't tell also your stuff wont smell like rubber! lol

Good luck brother. I was at Harmony Church. B co 4th platoon, 1-38th Infantry. Graduated in Feb 1989! Hooah! Oh and by the way, don't try and sneak in tobacco, they WILL find it and you WILL get smoked. Just leave it in the trash can when you board the plan to the 30 th Replacement Battalion. good luck!

Do what your told, when your told and how your told. Keep your mouth shut, your eyes, ears open. Don't be late, and don't push things to the last minute. Remember your buddy. Don't try to get away with things, because your Drill Sergeants know the poop. Forget short cuts, do things right the first time. There's no shame in not knowing. Remember - the dumbest question is the one never ask.

Listen to the drill SGT, pay attention and do your best. The round brown is looking for those who do not pay attention to details.

Some of my best soldiers were not the brightest or toughest. The best set themselves apart with their attitude to serve with me and the unit. One more thing, they always had a smile.
