Going with 9mm of the choices here. Because there are many subcompact and some pocket ones to choose from. But truthfully the best self defence weapon is the one you shoot well and accurately. And also have the most range time on. I personally carry a Beretta Nano or a Sig Sauar M11A1 both in 9mm. But I would love to have a Sig 226 or 229 in 357 sig.

My opinion is, carry the most potent round that you can. That may be a .380 some days, and a .45 on others. If concealment werent an issue I'd have a .45 on me all the time. I usually split the difference and carry a .40 (Glock 27) fall - Spring, and a .380 in the summer. Sometimes I slip a .45 into the rotation during the winter when I can conceal it.

I tend to switch between a .22Mag during the summer months, to a .45 in the winter also. I do want to get a good 9mm as an in between, but in the long, I still believe it comes down to shooting to hit your target .

I agree, which is why I dont have an issue with .380 unlike some. I'm actually the opposite of you, I'm trying to get rid of a 9mm to get a .380.

I have a great Ruger LC-9 that is super compact, has great capacity, tritium sights, and is extremely reliable and accurate. More importantly - ammo is plentiful, fairly affordable, and I can train on it frequently.

Colt 1911 Mark IV 70 Series, Clark Custom.
Match grade barrel, Heinie sights, frontstrap checkered, trigger job.
Beautiful piece of awesomeness.

I WAS TRAINED IN THE MARINES WITH THE .45 AUTO AND I LOVE THE DAMAGE THAT IT DOES....... WHY THE MILITARY WENT TO THE 9MM I DONT KNOW GIVE ME A .45 ANYDAY

The amount of training and expertise required to keep a 1911 running optimally is far and above that required to maintain am M9, M11, etc. All parts are drop in for our current service side arms. 1911's require more knowledge to repair, parts are not generally drop in and tolerances can vary widely between manufacturers. While military versions of the 1911 were made to looser tolerances to allow for some of this, working on 1911s is an art and not something that your average Company Armorer will be able to handle.

BEFORE 1987 ALL COMPANY ARMORER'S IN THE MARINE CORPS HAD A HANDLE ON THE 1911 I'M SURE OF THAT.........

yes indeed the .45 acp is a mans weapon but once you get good with it it rewards you
with knockdown power that no 9mm can do...I DONT CARRY my 1911 is for home defense, if i carried i would probably use it i have a handle on my PTSD but i dont take chances especially driving a vehicle and having a weapon with me bad MOJO..............

I must say.... quite a selection! I have a Ruger Single 6 .22 with LR and Mag cylinder...good for fishing and deer hunting (I load bird rounds and a couple bullets for just in case), have a Taurus PT 145 that I carry sometimes, but mostly a car carry, and a Taurus TC738 .380 for general carry. I own no 9mm. ANYTHING that you have in the situation you need it is better then leaving it at home.....

I have to go with my Sig 229 in S&W .40. Hits harder than 9mm and smaller than a .45

Glock 19 in a 9mm it is highly accurate loose action means less chance of a stove pipe or jam. It will get the Job done. That is a personal choice however what one is familiar with and has ran enough rounds through to be comfortable with Your self defense weapon should be closer than your wife you need to not just be familiar with is you need to know it inside and out total darkness or in the light. Both your and your loved ones lives depend on that
