I have a friend that lived quite a sheltered life. I made him a must-see list of war movies and ended up with quite possibly 100 titles. Didn't want to make too much post with what everyone else has contributed. But a really fun subject. Thanks for the OP!

I believe the Siege of Firebase Gloria was ignored, by and large, because of the exposure of the more disgusting aspects of war that civilians just don't want to know about. When they find the slaughtered village and he remarks "This is effective" I heard several people remark what an animal he was to be so uncaring. Civilians......what can you say?

As a young man growing up in Kansas City, Missouri, my father and I use to sit around in the 50's and 60's and watch war movies together. I remember seeing a movie that became my litmus test for ALL war movies. It starred Gary Cooper, Jane Wyatt, and Walter Brennan. It was called "Task Force". Needless to say, I use this as my standard for good war movies.

Even though Martin Sheen was Robert E. Lee, Gettysburg was a great movie. Saw it years ago on tv and have seen no sign of it since.

"Mountain Men" from 1980, with Charlton Heston. Almost no one I know who is alive has seen this movie. It had a lot of fight scenes with Native Americans. . .and illustrated a long-lost perspective on the war between the settlers and Native Americans.

"Go Tell the Spartans" - Burt Lancaster, early days of Vietnam advisors prior to US build up, not fancy but it makes a statement.

"Purple Hearts" Small part there from R. Lee Ermey as well. A couple of good one liners too

Got to be Heartbreak Ridge. Had the IG of my ROTC Field Training encampment quote it at our in-brief. Never forgot that one-liner, that's why my flight gave me the callsign Recon for the rest of the encampment!
