Some military movies got overlooked in the recognition department. I liked "The Siege of Firebase Gloria"-just because R. Lee Ermey rocked it with his one-liners! What other less-known tasty military nuggets are out there, possibly undiscovered?

I haven't seen "Bravo Two Zero" mentioned yet. British film about an SAS team on a long range surveillance mission that was compromised during the Gulf War. I was in Long Range Surveillance (LRS) for most of my career. Great movie showing a LRS/LRRP style mission gone bad from compromise, breaking contact, evasion, and time as POWs.

For my money, another movie with Lee Ermey: The Boys in Company C. The boot camp part is actually funny even if mostly unrealistic.

More seriously, "Ballad of a Soldier" and "Yesterday's Enemy" (both of which you have to hunt for.

This was a great movie. Another military movie I haven't seen or heard of in years was prisoner of War starring David Carradine and Mako. Another military based series that I liked was Tour of Duty.

Vietnam era Go Tell the Spartans and a Rumor of War are pretty good... a Marine Boot Camp movie called Tribes was what inspired me to join the Corps...

Mostly unknown nowadays, but not underrated in its time is Grand Illusion (1937) directed by Jean Renoir.

Among a number of WWI POWs in a German camp is a small group of French aviators who plot and execute an escape. The relationships between the various classes that permeated Europe in that era are explored. It is the origin of the "Von Rauffenstein Maneuver" for downing a shot of brandy when your neck and upper spine are in a metal frame due to an unfortunate incident with an aeroplane.

The version without subtitles assumes you understand English, German, French and Russian at the least.

I watch it at least once a year when I can find the DVD.

Zulu, Michael Caine in his first movie. "We can't have more than one military disaster in a day. It looks bad in the papers and upsets civilians at their breakfast." Best one liners... best nco... best whining civilians... best loafing enlisted man AND sticks closely to actual events.

"The Beast" best interrogation scene yet.

Fury... "Best job I ever had." Might become the 19 series motto.

... and for my close to all time favorite lines from Aliens "somebody wake up Hix."

R.I.P. Captain Garth. Charlton Heston was actually a veteran of World War 2 and served in the Army Air Corps in the Northern Pacific and Alaska if memory serves me well. He was wounded in the foot by shrapnel and walked with a slight limp for the rest of his life.
