I'm submitting the paperwork to go active duty (it actually looks like it will at least make it past battalion so I stand a decent chance) and I was thinking about going 11X (I'm eligible according to the current business rules for prior service). My question is what installations have you enjoyed the most in terms things to do on and off post, the surrounding area, etc. What units would you say were the best you were assigned to in regards to how deployable you were, school opportunities, how squared away things were, and things of that nature. Thank you for the help.

I only had two 11B assignments: 82d Airborne Division and 3d US Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard). While I enjoyed my time at the 82d, The Old Guard definitely gets my vote as the best infantry assignment out there!

Ft Carson was pretty good. Lots of things to do in Colorado if you like the outdoors. People who were stationed there told me the only place better is Germany.

Home of the Infantry...Benning was a great duty station. I had a great time at Hood, Lewis, Riley and in Germany. So many choices to chose from. As you will discover no unit is better than the last one you were in and no duty station is worse than the one you are at.

If you are ABN or going that is the place. I was there in 70 went to NCOC school then ABN, did my OJT with an ABN Company then headed to Nam, it is the home of the Infantry and I enjoyed it there. Of course ORD would have been the best choice, but sadly it is gone now!

Calling all infantry: What are/were your favorite assignments while serving as an 11B?

I know some will see my response and say, "Of course." However, Italy and the 173rd was truly the best assignment I've had to date. It wasn't just the location. I was lucky enough to do my Company Command there with three great First Sergeants. The bond between an Officer and an NCO, when good, is absolutely irreplaceable.

Thank you sir. I'm really interested in the 173rd actually. Would you happen to know what the odds are that an airborne infantryman might end up there right now? From what I gather it seems that most of them get sent to Bragg but I've been at Bragg for awhile and I'd like to get out and explore what the Army has to offer. Any help would be appreciated sir.

If you are dead set on trying to get into the 173rd, I would look at a potential re-enlistment option. I would also keep in mind that infantrymen need to diversify their paths more than ever now. Do not be afraid of taking a mech or stryker assignment. The Army needs all of us to have experience in each area. There are a number of good posting in the mech/stryker side (Carson, Lewis, Stewart, etc.).

Anywhere in the 82nd.
(LOCK IT UP HATERS)

Ample opportunity there. Great place to be developed as a young infantryman. They have an organic PRC, so you WILL go to ranger school. You will go to airborne school. Get that tab, better believe you'll be heading to jumpmaster. Once again, opportunities are endless there if you stay focused and have the right mind.

The idea of being getting put back into Bragg right after I leave it is vomit inducing, SSG (Join to see). I'm already airborne so I guess that increases the odds of me getting stationed there though. Confirm or deny?

Being Infantry in the 82nd is where a man finds what he's really made of. If you're trying to join the infantry, that's what you be focused on. Not what's around. Plus, some of the best times I've had were drinking Jack Daniel's and barbecuing at Pike Field next to the 82nd sign.

SPC (Join to see) Lol The Raks of the 3rd brigade were expanded after the 503rd of th ee's 173rd were retired from the 101st, prior to being reactivated and designated as Airborne and assigned to Italy, lol the answer to your question is because the Rakkasan's always have something to prove...

Spent 9 years straight from Pl to company command. Only a few (3) brigades in the army that are universally recognized with the RAKKASANS arguably the most notable. Ever in northern Virginia I can spend hours talking about my time there. Great Soldiers and Leaders. SPC (Join to see)

I was with C Co 3rd 187th in Nam, was also with 3 other ABN units there. It is no longer ABN but it was the best damn Battalion in Nam. And from what I hear now is still one of the best. If you are looking to be hardcore Iron Rakkasans are the unit to chose. Was never at FT Cam joined them in Nam after ABN School. Still the best unit I was with. Worked same AO as 1st Cav and worked with Marines, Raks were the best!

I bounced around a lot.. Ft Lewis now JBLM was good, Korea eh.. Hawaii nice, panama (not open) great, Ft Campbell great, Ft Drum great... But again any assignment is what you make it. I always wanted to go to Alaska and Europe but never got the opportunity so my suggestion, pick some place you may never go as a civilian and check it out.

The area was nice, lots to do hunting, fishing, camping... Shooting, there was an archery range on post. Lots of boating and stuff like that. The people were pretty cool as well. The units were all good but I wanted to train my ass off and in 3-187 IN we did just that, lots of opportunities for schools as well, at all levels. It was the one place where just about everyone at every level helped to shape me as a leader. It was an excellent assignment.. But so was Drum, only real difference is drum can get pretty damn cold.

Thank you 1SG. Seeing as how I'd be MOST, is there any way I can help influence where I'd go when I get my orders? Could I call my branch manager during OSUT? I know needs of the Army will always come first but I'd like to see if there is maybe a choice between a few possible assignments rather than getting my name drawn out of a hat. Thank you.

As a lot of the guys have already said, "It depends on what you are looking for career wise in the Army". Now I a weirdo and here is why:
I chose Fort Drum and Infantry in my contract. I heard all of this negative talk about it being the frosty tundra of the US (it's true by the way) and I had the mentality that if I was going to a regular Army unit, I wanted to go where it sucked the most. If I could hack it then maybe I could make something of myself.
But each unit (especially 18th Airborne Corps) has it's pros, cons, benefits and suck-fests. Drum had me 6 hours drive from home and being a New Englander I had a knack for the cold weather anyways. Plus I liked the 10th Mountains history and it being one of the most highly deployed units in the Army.
I spent my whole enlistment in the same Battalion and Company and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. I cannot speak for any other units, but I had a mix of every grunt specialty in my unit, which enhanced our skills and cross-training. In the grand scheme of things, it all depends on what you are looking for in a career within the Army. Each unit has its pros i.e. 82nd and the school options, Drum for best chance of a deployment, 173rd for Airborne and a train ride to half of Europe, and so on.
Take in what we all have to share, and just weigh out what you want in the end. I mean, you already went Army so you're good when it comes to choosing the right branch. Hahahaha (Bring on the hate)

My favorite duty station as for things to do would have to be Ft Carson, Co. Training wise, I would say Korea but I believe that was mostly due to my CO. Our training was probably the most realistic training we could do without actually being in combat. Just about every FTX lead up to a live fire exercise using grenades and claymores. I think entering/clearing a trench was my favorite except for the low crawling through a rice paddy (they use feces to fertilize them) to set up a claymore preparing for the counter attack. All my buddies were laughing at me when I got back to the trench because I was soaked with shit but I got the last laugh when I detonated the claymore and shit rained down on everyone!

The Area Isn't Bad. Kansas State University is Close, Kansas University is Also Pretty Close, Kansas City is Two Hours Away. If Your an Outdoorsy Type of Guy There's Plenty of Hunting/Fishing/Boating/Camping Around the Area. As Far as the Units, They're Beyond Jacked Up. And It's All Mechinized Here and They Focus On That More Than Anything

From what my buddies in the infantry are saying the units they've been with that are worth going to are the 101st and 10th Mtn. In your experience or from those of you friends what do you know about those two?

101st Deploys Often So If That's What Your Looking for That's Definitely a Good Place to Go, 10th Mtn is Cold Unless You Go to Fort Polk, Then its Hotter Than Hell. Heard Good Things About Fort Lewis Also.
