I was curious as to whether or not an Army MP would be allowed to carry their personal weapon off duty. I’ve heard mixed responses, but apparently the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 was extended to military personnel in 2013 allowing them to carry off duty in all 50 states and D.C.

Can anyone fact check this?

If not under orders, then you become a simple civilian like everyone else and you need to comply with local weapons carry laws. In Florida, course attendance is waive if you provide weapons training documentation. Still need fingerprints and the background check.

Even USCG petty and commissioned officers, who are federal law enforcement officers, cannot use such authority while off duty. I once had to get one of our sailors out of the Bronx jail for carrying a concealed private handgun while off duty. Plea bargained a felony down to a misdemeanor with probation and no jail time.

I wouldn’t have plead that down, HB 218 is very clear. He must have violated it in some way right?

I have my LEOSA ID, and use it to carry in CT and RI, and I am in the process of getting my CT Card. Funny thing is, if your are a CT resident, you cannot use your retired LEOSA ID to buy a weapon. Only an active duty LEOSA ID can be used. I need to get the CT license to buy. (And it costs $140 just to get the temporary license - you need to pay to exercise your right in this fascist state.)

I’m located in Maryland, so I can understand your frustration. I’m not even in the ARNG yet and I understand it. I’m hoping once I enlist as an MP I’ll be able to get mine and carry in the state.

It's funny that my younger brother, who went to college instead of the military, moved to Arizona, and turned into a gun nut, with an AR-15, and M1 Garand, and a bunch of pistols. At least I have a Glock I got from a friend that I can carry.
