No a NCO cannot give extra duty, only the commander can give a Soldier extra duty as punishment. A NCO can give corrective training to a Soldier but it must be directly related to the deficiency.

EXAMPLE: PVT Snuffy shows up to formation in the wrong uniform after the correct uniform was put out.

SSG Hardcore requires PVT Snuffy to report to the CQ desk three times a day. In the morning PVT Snuffy will be in APFU. In the afternoon he will be in duty uniform and in the evening he will be in ASUs. SSG Hardcore will be present to inspect PVT Snuffy each time.

CO: "1SG, PVT Snuffy seems to have a lot of extra energy, do you have something for him to over the long week end?" BWAHAHAHAHA. Que chain gang song. Troops feared Top's chain gang in my days as a E1-E4, so many lousy jobs he could come up with.

What happens if an NCO does give extra duty on a counseling statement? I've seen one on a 4856, instead of a 2627 and it was for 30 days as opposed to the 14 allowed for a company grade officer.

SSG (Join to see) - NCOs can't give anyone extra duty. Only the commander can do that. NCOs cannot punish - we do corrective training. If a NCO put that on a 4856 and gave it to you, you should have went to your next higher or the commander. That was wrong. Did you do the extra duty? I wouldn't have.

We give corrective training, not extra duty.

NCOs can not give extra duty. They can give corrective training. With the corrective training the punishment must fit the crime. Extra duty can be imposed under ARTICLE 15, the NCO can recommend a punishment of extra duty to the commander, though can not impose it. Hope this helps.
