An old friend of mine randomly posted a photo of himself in OCP’s with LTC rank. He told everyone that he just joined the Army Rerserves. I asked him what unit, and he told me it’s the 101st Airborne. He has a BS in nursing. He’s 45 years old. He’s not on ako or on enterprise. My question is, does this story smell fishy?

Man, I must have done it wrong.
Starting out as an E-1 and working hard to earn my rank.
All I had to do is join the USAR version of the 101st. My Call of Duty skills will merit an immediate battalion command of Army Nurse widow-makers.

Same here. I started off as an E-1 and it took forever to get E-2 even after BCT because I went straight into Reserves (big mistake) then less than a year later transferred to full active duty. My Reserve unit sucked. Most of my army friends did their commitment in AD then retired from the Reserves. It seems rank was quicker in Reserves than AD. I always thought it was the other way around.
My Call of Duty skills are terrible so no promotion for that either.

Sucks to be me. I joined before call of duty came out so I couldn't be an instant badass. I should probably sue someone for something.

A waitress at my favorite restaurant says a guy comes in sometimes and brags that he is a 5 star General in the Navy.

Tell him it's a crime to impersonate a United States Army Officer. Ask for his promotion orders and ask him to show him his Military ID card via email. Note his DoD # of his CAC card and turn him in to the authorities along with the emails. Plain and simple.

It’s not a crime to impersonate an Army officer unless you use that impersonation to obtain something tangible (like military benefits). Simply pretending to be a service member (even dressing up and going around falsely telling people you are in the military) is not a crime. The Supreme Court struck down that version of the Stolen Valor Act years ago.

LT (Join to see) - that only applies to civilians. A current Service Member impersonating a higher rank still has some issues.

SSG Trevor S. Copy that, I was assuming for the purposes of this post that the impersonator is a civilian.

LTC Michael Keenan - I think I received my GCM after three years active duty enlisted. I don't know what the requirements are now.

Ask him was he awarded his blue cord for Valor from the S1 at 101st HALO CAV BSB? If he got that, then he's legit. If he knows Master Chief, he's more legit than any of us.

Ok, just so the Navy chimes in. Roger that - Sgt Hayden, LTC Broom, MSG Jackson.

Ma'am when (3) enlisted and a senior officer throw down the bullshit flag. Dare this guy to pick it up! But, I like what MSG Jackson said. Ask him where he works. Hell, if I were near the guy, I suggest the same thing. Enlisted, especially senior (E7-E9) have little tolerance for pretense or pretenders!

Just an old Chief's thoughts!

So here’s the update. I had accidentally deleted the screen shots I had taken at work of this man in his OCPs and when I had asked him about what his unit was, he took the pics down. However, he told me he was leaving for airborne school. Today, he posted this pic but also posted that he was in Florida with his daughter at her beauty pageant. My theory is that he is trying to impress his relatives in the Phillipines. But who knows...

CPL Joseph Elinger - It's time most of you that posted, do some research and not post what you've been led to believe. It doesn't take much to actually read regulations. As stated before, to correct the original poster, an officer too, Medical reserve officers can be appointed to a reserve rank depending on their qualifications from civilian, up to O-6.....from a civilian doctor or even a nurse without any military service. They serve USUALLY in a REGULAR military unit while on active duty, as in this officer's case. As for this individual wearing a good conduct medal as an officer, all that signifies is that the individual served 3 years active prior service at some point as enlisted before becoming a civilian. He still is to wear all awards. I served 9 years enlisted, AF, and wear the good conduct medal with two OLCs. As for a nurse being directly appointed a LTC from civilian, I've never seen one but I did check with medical officer recruitment and it can be done to O-6 (Colonel) but rare. So, he could have been enlisted years ago, and he could have served in Desert Storm enlisted. Not a big deal. As I stated before, I knew an AF LTC at Aviano AB who was appointed from civilian life a LTC. He was a specialty doctor in civilian life, AF Reserve on active duty and we didn't have an AF Reserve unit at Aviano. I was appointed a Reserve Warrant Officer and my active duty unit at Ft. Bragg was not with an Army Reserve Unit. I didn't go Regular until selected for Regular Army while in Korea. I had an active duty commitment after selected for Warrant but was a Reserve officer on active duty and never served in a Reserve unit.

Army nurses can enter the Nurse Corps at a higher rank if the specialty is needed, but I have not seen a LTC with a bachelors of science in nursing. I could see it if he was a certified nurse anesthetist or doctorally prepared nurse practitioner with a masters degree and prior service.
