So I am reclassing when my reenlistment comes up, I will obviously return to AIT, what I am wondering is whether I could call HRC and (nicely) ask for a specific duty station if it is available

Oh wait, I just reread all that.
No.
You will receive your follow on instructions 4 months prior to class start date. You will attend school in a TDY enroute status. Your future branch manager is not in control of your follow on assignment (except certain specific MOSs) Retention branch is. Retention branch will place you on assignment and you absolutely MAY NOT call them. In fact, if you call them your Career Counselor will get a very nasty email and the training follow manager might just have the perfect candidate for that Korea or Sill assignment.

SGT(P) (Join to see) good luck and remember that if you’re not on assignment 120 days prior to your course starting you can go to your Career Counselor and request your preferred follow on assignments

When I reclassed to 42A (2012) we didn't get our follow-on assignments until halfway through the course (about 3 weeks in).

SSG(P) (Join to see) this is for in service reclass. People coming from enlisting in the Army and Reclassing don’t get their follow in until they’re in school. People who reclass through retention go TDY enroute to their next duty assignment

I understand that SSG, that's why I said ask if it was available. Since whenever you hit 3 years on a duty station you can just hit up hrc and request a pcs to another duty station, just wondering if I could do the same at AIT since it wouldn't be my first contract.

There’s a lot more that goes into the process. When the time comes, I recommend talking to your retention NCO. They can send requests for you. Hitting up branch, they can only tell you certain assignments they NEED to fillSGT(P) (Join to see)

Yes you absolutely can but don’t be surprised if they just blow you off. In fact, since HRC is working from home they won’t answer the phone. You can email, but they generally wont answer. Your best bet is to update your ASK. If there is an assignment opening that matches a location you want, you might just get it.

In my recent experience graduated from AIT, ASK was actually extremely helpful for most of my class. Most of us got our top picks.
However mine was a PCS length school, it may be different for TDY en-route. You can definitely make the request, but don’t get your hopes up.

And to clarify, they probably won’t appreciate you contacting them for a request. I just want to add all perspectives in here by letting you know that it is a possibility and I personally saw IET soldiers getting their assignment changed on their own. I’m not recommending it, just providing some experience.

You can always ask. Assignment manager might laugh at you, but it's not like they can kick you out of the MOS for calling. That said, I don't honestly think they'll give you anything, you're just needs of the Army at that point. Good luck!

I figured, just getting some conflicting information from my first line, so it had me wondering, thanks 1SG.

Nope. You get trained and qualified in your MOS your then go where the Army needs you, as the Army needs you. You do not get to pick where you want to go. Not straight off at least.

Yeah, I get that, I was just wondering since you can do that from your duty station, and this would be my reclass, so not first enlistment. I guess that is not the case either. But thanks for the response SSG.

Now that would make too much sense and it wouldn't be the Army now, would it? lol

SGT(P) (Join to see) - Would it make sense? 300,000 Soldiers calling one phone number for the couple dozen jobs available in Hawaii, Germany and Italy?

SGT(P) (Join to see) - Oh yeah, total sense. Hundreds of calls every hour, 5 hour wait times, unanswered emails, just so that every other Joe can ask for the "good" duty stations instead of the "bad" ones.

SGM Jeff Mccloud I was thinking of more of an automated system. Kind of like a wishlist that actually mattered lol. Of course you'd have to implement certain variables such as first come first serve and a desirability range, that way you don't get a soldier getting a tier one desirability duty station every single time. I don't know, seems completely possible. But hey, it was a joke SGM. I do appreciate the info I collected yesterday/today :)

I’ve reclassed twice once when I came in the Army (Prior Service) and when I reenlisted I reclassed... luckily I got Carson and Campbell out of those two... what are you reclassing to and where do you want to go ?

Planning on doing 35L and was trying to get Japan, or at least some overseas assignment. Trying to see the world damn it.
