I have a single tattoo of what was supposed to be a semicolon that didn’t quite turn out right. It’s the only tattoo I have on my hands.

Most recruiters are aware of what the Semi colon tattoo means. And then there’s the question of “have you ever had thoughts about harming yourself” which according to your tattoo would be yes.

I’m gonna be blunt with you, the military isn’t for you. I’ve lost too many soldiers to suicide and you joining the military having contemplated it before is not worth the risk

The tattoo was for a family member, not me.

Given what the tattoo means, a savvy recruiter may ask some additional questions. Assuming you got the tattoo for the meaning i am talking about, do you think military service is for you? This question is genuine and not meant to be hurtful or demeaning. I just know folks with the tattoo and am familiar with the meaning behind it.

I do intend on asking a recruiter about it, and the symbol does have the meaning you’re thinking of, and that’s exactly why I’m thinking of service, to be the best me I can be. I appreciate you for making it aware that you weren’t trying to be demeaning. Happens often on here when anyone asks anything.

Also in addition, the tattoo doesn’t represent my past directly, it was for a family member I lost.

Depends on the branch you're trying to join. Ask your Recruiter.

SFC William Farrell - The Semi Colin tattoo symbolizes that you have either dealt with suicide, depression, etc, or have know someone that are or did deal with those issues. So it could mean your personal life, a friend or family member.

When used as a tattoo, it represents when a person could have ended their life but chose not to. It is an empowering symbol of a person's ability to write their own story and overcome struggles. CPT Lawrence Cable

SSG (Join to see) - Yes, I guess I explained that badly. The other place I've seen it is on the survivors of friends or family of suicides.

1SG John F - The definition of a Semicolon. a punctuation mark (;) indicating a pause, typically between two main clauses, that is more pronounced than that indicated by a comma.
So a pause in the course that lead to the suicide thoughts.
