I am going back to basic training as an E-4, after a few years out of the service. I am Airborne and Air Assault qualified...should I wear (if it's allowed of course) my patches...or should I just try to keep a low profile? What would you do?

I'd stay UNDER the radar, simple as that...

Maybe you can wear them to graduation. The last thing you want to do is try to show up an insecure Drill Sergeant that may not have those badges. In my basic and AIT they allowed prior service folks with combat patches, badges, and ribbons to wear them to graduation on their Class As. As far as on the camo uniform in training, not a good idea. Don't be a Mr Know It All, reaffirm the Drill Sergeants and your time will go much smoother as a prior service.

I say wear them. There was a prior service VN vet in my basic training platoon. We called him grandpa and he took the kidding well. When we went to take photos in Class A's, he had his own set with all the medals and awards from his prior service. The DS really gave him hell for that. Up until that time he had just said he was prior service and had forgotten everything from when he was in before.

Ask your DI when you get to your unit. He/She may not want you to wear them so that your fellow soldiers don't look at you every time they give instructions. Remember the others are new recruits and the DIs may want them to go to them when a recruit has a question and not you.
But I would be shocked if the DI's didn't make you a recruit platoon leader.

I had to go back because I was out of the service longer than 6 years. But I am back now...not bad, but it was worst than the first time I went to basic.

You don’t really have a choice it’s already part of your uniform. Since your prior service you should already know that.

I could be wrong but you may want to look further into the regulations. I believe you can wear the air assault badge but think you need to be assigned to an airborne unit in order to wear the airborne badge. I believe you need a certain number of jumps a month in order to stay certified as airborne also.

If you earned the badges, you can wear them,,,forever. Don't need to be on jump status.

Having been in the Navy we all understand the Army gives out medals for standing around. Yes, I know, you can be a hero on a ship and the commanding officer will get the medal. So, do you really want to draw attention to yourself in basic training? Good chance by just being the older one you will draw attention to yourself. Like Reagan said "Its amazing what you can accomplish when you don't care who get's the credit." Be a real leader and help the others excel to include your company commander. You can wear them on the parade ground during graduation. Maybe one of the guys you help will introduce you to his older sister.

Maybe you have no idea what Airborne or Air-assult are... but it's not a "medal" that's freely handled by "standingaround" ..like you navy gays know about! And yes... you can all keep the brothers!

Yes you had to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. More than once. No I'm not going to question the guy jumping out of perfectly good airplanes because the guy behind had the Rainbow Ribbon. You do know that women are stationed on ships now? No not comfort women but professionals unlike the lady on the supply ship that pulled into Diego Garcia and was air-evaced to the NRMC in the P.I. with PID and $20,000 in her pocket. But I'm dating myself. Then there was the ex army stores clerk that got out and re-enlisted in the US NAVY and went to corpsman school. As an E2 had no trouble wearing all the standing around ribbons for his first four years on his WORKING WHITES in a HEALTHCARE environment on a pediatric floor taking care of dependent children. Couldn't be depended to get near a kid that might barf on his RIBBONS. I was the Sr. Corpsman for the ward.
There is a time to draw attention to yourself and there is a time to stay under the radar. Did you miss the part about giving the Captain credit for busting your ass as a sailor? Finally Doris Miller gets credit for the shit he did at Pearl Harbor. Look it up. How you judge yourself needs to be bigger than the pat on the back.
