Can some ribbon racks be over the top, or is more always better?

It's the Airforce, he probably gets a ribbon for getting out of his rack on time.

You're probably right. In the Air Force, I worked at NSA, at Fort Meade. As an E-4, I had my own barracks room, ate at a chow hall staffed by civilians and NEVER had extra duty. In comparison I would see soldiers, up to about E-6, drilling, pulling duty and still in open-bay barracks. Was I embarrassed by my 'luxuries' ? Heck no. I wore 4 ribbons. Air Force Commendation (earned), National Defense (given), good conduct and a unit citation. Not over decorated. Like my t-shirt proclaims, "I joined the Air Force because I had high enough scores to do so".

Sometimes I wonder about all the ribbons. I spent 4 years out of the country, 1/66 thru 11/69 and all the Navy awarded was the National Defense Service ribbon. But of course the Navy could never acknowledge that our command structure even existed. The Navy in those days hid us and many other units from the light of day.
I do believe that it is good to acknowledge a units accomplishments and the members contribution with appropriate awards.

Yeah but the Air Force has ribbons that most services don't and hand them out like candy.

Two or three rows of three or four ribbons starting from the highest. Two or three Badges.

Great man, I've crossed paths with this amazing Chief in my career, when he was a MSgt flying with AFSOC. He has definitely earned his rack!! Way to go Chief M!!!!

A testament to Ribbon and Award Inflation. I recall a time when I served with WWII veterans who had only six awards and they were combat veterans of some tough battles. Usually a first award was Good Conduct for an enlisted man and there were no such things as Sea Service and Overseas service since that was what Sailors did. If he is authorized to wear them OK
