All of the states on the same in relations how they do points. All soldiers in you MOS and Grade are promoted based on an order of merit list based on your promotion points. If there is a vacancy and you have the most points then you are going to get promoted.

I would look up NGR 600-200 and some AR 600-8-19 for further info.

Sometimes doesnt matter if you have the most points the person in front of you could have more points but is listed as only will take a promotion in a certain area best thing to do is put your self in a better position to be promoted by accepting promotions state wide

SGT Sanchez- I'm in the OHARNG and have been for 21 years. The promotion boards are different now than they ever have been. Yes your APFT score, weapons qual, and awards play a parts, but it would behoove you to ask your PSG for the AAR from this years promotion board. Each year the president of the board set a baseline which could be a number of things from a certain APFT score to SSD complete, or what NCOES you have completed. What criteria they use may change a bit from year to year so the best advice I can give you is; get to or keep a high APFT score, complete SSD and NCOES one level above what you need for you next promotion, continuing education, whether college or correspondence course. If you need any other guidance let me know. Your in the 1-148th INF. I was a 1SG for the Forward Support Company from 2013 until February of this year when transferred back to my side of the state.

Thank you 1SG I may pm if you for more guidance. What I have learned is there are alot of people who have little information but few who are subject matter experts and the ones who are 42A readiness NCO are very busy understandable. If you know full timers I can talk to (ones who usually have most experience) please let me know. Thanks in advance. I just want prepare early for my e-6 packet for next year and be proactive vs reactive. I know one biggest things is having incomplete packets. Thanks in advance.

I would be glad to offer my guidance, I am a 42A, formerly from my Brigade S1. I see that you are currently an E5, the current policy per AR 600-8-19, which covers enlisted promotions states that you are aware anywhere from 0-75 points depending on how well you perform in several areas. These areas include:
Weapon Qualifications -75 points for expert, 50 for sharpshooter, 25 for marksman.
APFT- 5 points for a score of 180, all the way to 75 points for a score of 300.
Awards- you earn up to 75 points for the major awards; ARCOM-20, AAM-15, DRIVER BADGE-5, ICM/ACM-10 POINTS...etc
Civilian education- you get 1 point for each college credit, up to 60 points for an Associate Degree, or 75 for a Bachelor Degree.
Finally, you also receive points for longevity, 3 points each year for time in service, and 5 points for each year in grade.

This will give you a maximum score of 450 Administration points, you will also receive a number of leadership points, once you are boarded along with the rest of the E5s in your state. You will only compete directly with the other E5s in your MOS.

Hope this helps!

Thanks that is what I am lookign for. Is that for promotion to SGT or to SSG I know the points break down is different for example APFT is weighted more for promotion to SGT to SSG etc. Also do you know how many points one can recieve for Army Correspondent courses ( I have my bachelors already)? Also is there anyway to find out how many points certain schools are worth? I have opportunity to go to Master Fitness Trainer Course and ABIC.

Okay, I can't guarantee that your state is the same as mine, however here is what I am used to for my organization,.
Everything I told you is with regards to competing for promotion to E6. All of the point values are the same regardless of the rank you are competing for, but when you are competing for E6 there is more of an emphasis during the boards on your leadership skills. You should now have at least one NCOER, so your leaders will place more value on your ability to effectively lead and manage the Soldiers under you.
Your Bachelors Degree is worth 75 points, and as with all of the other categories of Administration points, you can accumulate a max of 75 points for correspondence courses (one point for each 5 hours of correspondence). Master Fitness and ABIC are excellent training opportunities for a junior NCO, and you will be glad to know that all resident training weeks are worth 5 points for each week (courses MUST be at least 40 hours or 5 days long to receive credit for the week).
Keep in mind that SSD cannot count for correspondence course credit, and NCOES (WLC, ALC, SLC etc...) will not count towards resident training, because they are mandatory training to be eligible for promotion.

The active duty Army uses a slightly different system from what I understand. That may be where some of the confusion is coming from. There is a worksheet that is used as a formula to determine your total points, though I don't remember the DA or NG number.
