I work as a contractor and the position requires a secret clearance. a couple of buddies were talking about how a year was added to the secret clearance because of the back log. does anyone know if this is true and if so do they still require the renewal packet be dropped 30 days of the original?

I don't know specifically for Secret but a year was added to TS because of the back log. TS is now renewed every 6 years instead of 5 so I would say it's definitely a possibility.

Your FSO is likely the best bet for this information, but as long as you initiate the clearance process before it expires, it will remain active until the investigation concludes.

A Secret is good for 10 years as long as you are working in a position requiring an Active Secret Clearance. Most likely he held an interm Secret for a year before getting his final. An interm is basically a records check and not a fully completed investigation. I am assuming it hasn't changed recently.

Can someone get an 11-year secret clearance because of the backlog?

Definitely out of my realm of knowledge but I’d have to imagine the issue date of your clearance would be that day and not exceed the max time. Like I said I’m not certain, just a view.
