I'm looking at training up for selection and then hopefully passing SFAS. Say by some miracle I don't get dropped from Q-Course and I do pass, would I be able to volunteer for Drill School?

Yes you can. Unless it changed SF branch has an obligation to send folks to Ft. Benning IOT to be DS as part of the 18X program.

Was still the case when I was a DS on Sand Hill from 2011-2013. Pretty sure it’s still the same. Anyone can volunteer for DS Duty.

CW3 (Join to see), USASOC played sleekly on that deal. The send, on some instances, PSYOP NCOES in lieu of SF ones. I know, I had 2 of them. It I guess someone found out an put a stop to it.

Went through the school early 2010 and if I'm not mistaken we had a long tabber. So yes you could still be a DS

Ha! SF was just something I was looking into. It'd definitely be an amazing experience, but I don't think I'm a good fit for the program, mostly because I don't do well at all under pressure, not to mention I'm only 130 lbs at 5'4" ; I'll most likely get dropped during the team building exercises during Q-Course.

You could, but you won't want to. Once you pass the Q course, which will be one to two years long, you'll owe three years on a team, by regulation before you ETS. But by professional development model, you'll need four years of team time. After that you'll return to SWC to be an instructor. This is when you would be a drill if you chose, it's your force generating assignment. At that point you'll be a SFC and coming from a relatively unstructured and fluid environment. You will not want to go back through Basic Training, being treated like a private, and then looking forward to two straight years of back to back to back teaching brand new kids how to be Soldiers, many who don't even want to be there. Not when the other choice is going to SWC and working in a committee that you want to work on teaching a skill you enjoy teaching. The second choice is easier, more fun, and more in line with your career progression model. It's the same reason no one leaves SF and goes to the 75th, it's harder and doesn't help their career progression in any way.

I will say though, we are attempting to make the Drill Sergeant Course less like basic and more developmental / functional.

SFC Christopher Adame I have lots of friends who loved being on the trail, and I was around back before it was revamped into its current re-Basic Training. My peers who were Drills back them thought that the current version, where you are re-indoctrinated into Basic Training, made for a better Drill Sergeant and better Soldiers.
Personally, I don't have any idea, and I've never wanted to be a Drill. But I have a ton of respect for the NCOs who do go on the trail, and you can tell who was a Drill years later because they bring a higher level of professionalism to the NCO Corps.

I appreciate your insight, Sgt. I've wanted to be a Drill Sergeant for awhile now, and one of my fellow Specialists was talking about Special Forces, so I was just wondering if it was possible to combine the two.

Highly unlikely, being accepted means just that. There is no value in sending you to DI school.

Back in 1981-83 my partner in Drill Sgt School was SF. We formed a life long friendship. He’d been asked to volunteer for the duty. I was the first person in my class to complete the course and John was the 2nd.

SF branch has a requirement to send SF NCOs to Drill Sergrant duty Ailey because of the 18X program. Since they train our SF babies we have to help in lame terms.

I've been told it'd be better to volunteer for Drill School as an E6, and from what I understand from SF, MSG, is that if you pass selection and then Q-Course, you are automatically promoted to said rank. Is this correct?

SPC (Join to see) if you haven’t made E5 by the time you graduate, yes the day you graduate
You will automatically pin SGT stripes. Since there Is no E5 slots in our MTOE, you will make E6 soon there after. Unless your just not performing. You will then more than likely make the E7 list in the secondary zone. And be a SFC within 2-3years after graduating rhe Q-course. Again, emphasizing if you’re performing.

Typically SF NCOs that volunteer for Drill Sergeant duty are guys trying to make E8. It will definitely help in that aspect. But no other reason.
