Recently moved to Illinois (Chicago). I called to register with the VA hospital here and they said I had to come in person to do it. Can't I just register online through the VA website?

Capt Brandon Charters, thanks for the tag.
CPT Aaron Kletzing, it's a bit antiquated, but you're better off going in person so they can register you at the local facility. I believe the announcement by Secretary Shulkin today will help fix this problem in the future: https://www.va.gov/opa/pressrel/pressrelease.cfm?id=2914.

Also, in addition to what Sgt (Join to see) shared, you can always contact your Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) who will work with the Traveling Veteran Coordinator for assistance in transferring your care and establishing you at the new facility.

LTC Jason Strickland - Sir, thank you for the great information. I registered at the Houston VA, so I will see if they can help me transfer my records to Portland, OR.

CPT Aaron Kletzing Almost two years ago, I moved to Washington state. I called and was told that I needed to go in person to The Portland, Oregon VA to register. I have not yet done that.

In MA I registered online and it took them 6 mos to finally call me back. A year later I had moved to NC. I registered online and within 3 weeks had everything I needed to do done. A couple of months after I finished with my initial appts in NC, MA called me to make an appt. I moved to AL 3 years ago and registered online. They still haven't called me back. I called them one day to check up on it and they told me that doing it in person isn't required but it usually works out better. I still haven't done it because I haven't heard a lot of good things about the system here.
