Running
If you can do 1 mile, what about 3 miles? How many more can you do? I think it is our duty to stay in shape, just in case we are needed again? What is the minimum to be considered in shape? Five miles without dying or more? Agree

I know for AF retention (MEB) purposes it is 100 yards.

From my understanding, the standard is based on that it is just enough to take cover and return fire.

I could run a mile without stopping on a bad day with no lungs or legs! I see me comrades do it all the time and that's a motivator!

TSgt J.D. Hall and SMSgt (Join to see) it is a good time to identify all the veterans in your immediate AO...just saying. And I agree, you should be able to run farther than they can shoot....or you better own a .308 if you can't run.

I haven't run a mile since about my eight year mark, thanks to ankle issues. There's a reason the Navy has a swim test for physical fitness. The flight deck is only 1100 feet long, but if the ship goes down, you might need to swim to get away from it.

SSG, Anything is possible. I'm Engineroom on missile subs then Fed Civil Service with Boilers,etc. They encourage and even compensate for health and wellness efforts. Since my time on 2 mile was to be under 26 minutes I could actually do it walking backwards. But if I was in emergency, running for help...yeah I can go further. Actually do like the runners high. Oxygen is basis of life. I can do w/o food, water,etc... for X amount of days. No O2 for 3 minutes ...Gone ! Running, deep breathing,etc. has kept my BP at 120/80 and am glad the Navy always stressed the need for O2 in the 16-21 % range for human existence. Always told for actual flood, fire first thing" Take a deep breath!

how about 12 miles. I retired in 2011 and started running the "Tough Mudder" it's an awesome way to stay in shape and have fun. it's a 12 mile run with 26 military style obstacles and lots of support for different organizations also. Try it, I did three last year and at 56 years old I have never felt better.

The legs and the respiratory are capable but not the back. I could push thru a mile but my goodness it hurts after, makes me limp for a couple of days. As much as I miss running it is just not worth it. Not long ago I was averaging a 5.47 mile, not to bad for a mid 40's man. I am getting spinal decompression and hope to be running again soonish even if it is only for short distances.

Sounds like some canal stenosis brother, did you have a hard life or what? Make sure you file a claim, you are too young and the process is long, but they will back date it. MRI with Contrast is the gold standard, but a standing MRI, is even better IMO, get the test done in the position that hurts. Keep my posted. Good luck with Decompression.

You are obviously pretty good at what you do. I actually have two seperate issues. Bulging disks L3-L5, my hips are rotated creating a narrowed opening, arthritis, and something called facets disease. So far I have been doing the decompression for 5 weeks and have had some improvement, I can put my socks on by myself now. In addition to all of that I have an issue with my S1 joint, we tried a cortizone shot and it worked great for about 36 hours.
I have had a bit of a rough life, a "hard landing" in Iraq I think is the main culprit to my back ailments. I am being treated at the VA and will be starting my claim soon. Thanks

I can run 5 miles in 45 minutes day after day. Really need to improve that score though. My PT run time (for 2 miles) is around 14:30 for the last PT test.
