I've been seeing a civilian doctor with my civilian health insurance for an injury stemming from a deployment to Iraq. I have a diagnosis but now they want me to do physical therapy 3 times a week, which equates to $240 a pay period in co-pays. Can I take the diagnosis to the VA and deal with them from here or will I still face the same financial hurdle?

SSG (Join to see), you can certainly bring your diagnosis from a civilian provider to the VA; however, there must be a linkage to a service-connected disability you have. VHA is there to serve your service-connected disabilities - ones for which you have a rating from the Veterans Benefits Administration. If you aren't rated, then the VA likely won't assist with your physical therapy; however, if the VA verifies the necessity of your treatment, then I'm confident they will work with you to get the necessary treatment; albeit in a VHA facility if they have the means to provide the treatment. Hope this helps.

I've never had a rating from the VA. I had started to pursue one in 2010 or 2011 which would've been a year or two after it happened but I ended up moving and never followed through.

I've also got that old school mindset concerning injuries and profiles. I'm in the Guard and a mil tech at an aviation support facility. I have been worried about how it would effect my flight status as a crew chief. I went on a mission last week for three days and all the flyin we did still has me ailing.

At this point I'd rather take the profile and get it fixed than risk further injury. I've been watching my dad, who's in his early 60s, dealing with the same issue that stemmed from his service in the navy in the 70s and I don't want to deal with that. I want to get it fixed if I can and prolong my career. I'm not ready to throw in the towel a couple years short of 40.

Thanks for your candor, SSG (Join to see). Get yourself fixed - it's not worth you repeating what you indicate your father went (is going) through. Once you're out of the military, even if you're rated 0% (yes, that's possible) for a service-connected condition, then the VA can help.

SSG (Join to see) Your unit should be doing an LOD on you if you were injured in country. Were you diagnosed over there or did you refuse to report it when you returned? It will be determined if the cause was in the line of duty or not- have you been through that process?

This unit I'm in now had nothing to do with it. I was in the MA Guard at the time and I'm in AL now so idk what they could do for me.

SSG (Join to see) - you should still have a record of the injury in file. They have to follow protocol and if it is on record it doesn't matter who your servicing unit was. I work full time as the Medical Admin so I have a small amount of insight on this. They are required to follow up regardless of what unit you were with and someone from your last unit should have explained it upon your return or within one of your briefing before deploying back home in the AOR. We ask everyome returning if they were injured during deployment. If you non report there is an issue, but if it you reoorted it then it is in your record. If it is still am issue go into medical and ask what to do...

Maj Marty Hogan - Capt, the fact that SGT Barrie has paperwork from the TMC should at least help a bit, should it not? It would show in-country, on-orders.... Now getting the system to actually do the LOD...different story, but they should.

Lt Col Terry Smith - it will help. I am not familiar with the Army speak but the process is/should be similar. The units med squadron should have a poc that initiates the LOD (line of duty). Bring om all yoir paperwork and they should tell you what you need for more paperwork. Again this should have been briefed upon return or before leaving the APR. What pisses me off is Active Duty will not process Guard amd Reserve on coutry. Lazy turds and it causes issues. But let us negate to do something from them and we answer to the MAJCOM. I have not heard from SSG (Join to see) to see where he is at in the process.

I've done it back and forth both ways. But both PCMs wanted to perform their own confirmations. Just a waste of time, but it's 90% about money, anyway.
