A recent MILPER Message (MILPER 14-143, Army Career Intermission Pilot Program) was recently released to to evaluate whether assigning a soldier from the Regular Army (RA) or United States Army Reserve (USAR) active guard/reserve (AGR) program to the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) in a non-participating inactive status will provide an effective means of enhancing retention through greater career flexibility.

What benefits would this bring the force and Soldiers?
What negative aspects do you see this type of program fostering?
The Army CIPP provides a onetime temporary transition from the RA/USAR AGR to IRR to allow Soldiers to pursue personal or professional growth outside the Army while providing a mechanism for their return to active duty in their prior component. The Army's long term intent is to retain the valuable investment in experience and training that is otherwise lost when a Soldier separates permanently.
Only 20 Officers and 20 Enlisted may be selected for this program per calendar year. Individuals selected incur an Active Duty Service Obligation (ADSO)/Service Remaining Requirement (SRR) in their component of two additional months for each month of inactivation under the pilot program.
You can learn more about this program by visiting the HRC Webpage at the link below. To view the entire MILPER Message, go to

What's your opinion, good idea? I think it would be a good idea to do it if you were concerned about having time to go to school. What would you use it for? Why take leave if you could get a 3 year break? Attached is the first page and the first paragraph of the second.
