I have a buddy that is Army Guard, in an AGR position. He is one of the Admin guys (used to be PAC office, now, not sure what they call it!). He just saw the pricetag on them $250!! He is hoping that the unit does not make him get one... so, the questions I have: 1. Do you have to be MOSQ CAV to wear the Stetson or just assigned to the unit? 2. Are they optional or can a unit direct the purchase of one? (ok, I understand that this could be dependant on leadership decissions....).

Can the force you? NO- Does he want to be on his chain of command's crap list for the rest of that tour?

Were I in a position, in which I was allowed to wear the Stetson, Damn Skippy. But maybe a good looking hat is just a southern thang.

In 3-4 cav, I was a unit supply specialist who earned the spurs. The unit didn't buy me a stetson or anything, but I was told that I could wear it even before I earned my spurs

2 years in Fort Hood with both III Corps and 1 Cav. Never have one. An extremely optional piece of gear.

The Stetson is a custom, not a regulation. The Cavalry Unit Commander will establish a spur ride program and lay out rules for wear. One does not wear the Stetson without earning the Spurs. I was an Ordnance Officer in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, has nothing to do with "MOSQ" anything, unless maybe a RC Commander adds it to the Spur qualification checklist (I know MOSQ is hard in the RC). after all, that is the point of crossed sabers, Stetsons , and Spurs. In the Cavalry, everyone is a Cavalryman....even the loggies.
The wear of these items is all by authority of the Unit Commander and doesn't really apply when you leave, unless you are attending a Cav function with another Cavalry unit. Then you are at Fiddler's Green and everyone else can ram it.
He won't be directed to get one but he will want to earn one.

Question I was at 19E tanker in straight armor Unit back in the early 80s, after I got out the unit became a Cav unit. I’ve been told by some veterans including a retired CSM that we can wear a Stetson if our unit became a Cav unit is this correct?

CPL Keith Smith - never heard of it working that way. Each Commander writes their own policy. So if the Regimental Commander decrees it in his policy/SOP that former members of the regiment are included. then go for it.
Usually the Spurs and Stetson is a package deal. You don't wear one without the other unless it is a civilian clothes thing, then it is Stetsons only. I would not put on spurs unless you have the spur ride Certificate.
Then again, any closet is a walk in closet if you try hard enough.

When and who can wear it is pretty much a squadron/battalion policy. 7th Regiment has a pretty exhaustive set of rules on their association webpage, and 1st Cav has adopted those division-wide last time I checked.
Can they make him buy it? No. Should he buy it anyway? Yeah. And I hate to tell joe to spend money on “optional” items but this one is kind of a big deal.

You get the option the wear it, however it's one of those implied tasks. I've heard rumors you can order them from supply. To wear the Stetson you have to be in or have been in a cavalry unit or be a scout. From what I'm tracking you dont have to have your spurs to wear it aswell.

Okay. I earned my Silver Spurs on a Cav Spur Ride at my first unit. I'm not part of the Cav Squadron right now, but with MEDCOM. I got 'once Cav, always Cav.' But to attend a formal MEDCOM Ball, would it be incorrect to wear the Stetson and Spurs instead of beret and no spurs? Or does it matter? My gut tells me that Stetson and Spurs can be worn at Cav functions, but not at MEDCOM ball if I'm not currently part of Cav unit. Anyone help??

That's a biig negative ghostrider. Only with the CAV, however, prior spur holders are good to go in CAV country when they have their specified days (usually Friday) in the CAV AO only. Be on the lookout for CSM's who never got their spurs and who catch you outside of the safe zone. They'll rat you out to the boss out of envy. Haters gotta hate.
