You can go straight into OCS, but some recruiting Battalions hold interviews or contests to see who will get the slots. You have already been to basic, so it might be a faster process for you once you do all of the paperwork.

I would ensure you are squared away prior to going. OCS has gotten pretty competitive, so if you happen to fail out... you would then owe the Army your time as an Enlisted Soldier at needs of the Army. So ensure you can knock out a 300 APFT and bring your A game. This will help your chances of commissioning and getting a branch that interests you.

CPT (Join to see) is correct. Recruiting BNs have an OCS mission every FY but is very competitive.

SFC(P) (Join to see) - SFC Horn is 100% correct. If you go through an AD recruiter you will appear in front of a board of officers, complete an interview, and essentially compete with other candidates for an 09S contract. I see you are in VT...having personally seen the program that the State OCS candidates go through in NH, I would recommend pursuing OCS through AD not your state program... VT in particular usually has a small pool of OCS candidates to start a class so they combine them with the other New England states and its usually run by NH.

APFT scores are important but not an enormous factor when I went through the AD OCS program at Fort. Benning....your best bet is to be the text book definition of a team player. Regardless of prior rank or MOS, your success at OCS will be based on picking your friends up when they need it and them filling in the gaps for you when your down.

LT McQuaid is spot on. PT for some reason is becoming less and less important. I did well and had a 292 PT score. It's not a deal breaker anymore unless you are low 200s. Pay attention in the classes, know the system, and show case your leadership traits. It's an assessment and selection, not a school intended to make you a great leader.

I actually just commented on another thread about this. It really is not as big as it used to be. Unless you are really struggling you should be fine. If you want to excel I would try to up your pt, but it is becoming less and less common to recycle or get dropped for pt events. More common for peer evals

I would suggest that you get a conditional release from the guard(however I know few that did it quickly) go to federal ocs. If you want to be active do not go into your states ocs program. You will never get out of the guard after that.

That's not entirely accurate. There are ways to go from NG or AR onto active duty.

Considering going guard to active army, if I go OCS is there a minimum enlistment time in order to go OCS or can I enlist just three years?

Another route would be to go through your State OCS to get your commission and then go Federal Service. Officers don't enlist but we do incur a minimum initial service time of 6 years with 2 additional years on IRR if we don't resign our commission. If we don't resign our commission and get out or retire, we are placed on IRR status until age 60-62 and can be called back to service.

Mike, we have the option to retain our commission and transfer into the Retired Reserves. With that, we are subject to recall, up until age 60. The IRR is an entirely different entity.

There was a direct option of going OCS in your initial contract, perhaps it's still an option, at this point OCS is really your only option for an AD commission.

SFC(P) (Join to see) tough question, I would ask your unit CAREER COUNSLOR, they should be able to square you away.
