Two of my uncles were wounded in the Pacific. Both were evacuated to hospital ships(I have VMails they sent home during that time). Both came home as a result of their wounds. One, GSW in the ankle and leg, received disability and medical benefits lifetime. The other, wounded by shrapnel in the chest and abdomen, did not receive disability but, as all veterans, did receive medical benefits. Like today, I'm assuming the difference was due to the severity and permanence of the damage.
PO1 Darren Martin, my uncle served in the Army with the 70th ID in Europe during WWII and was wounded while serving, receiving the Purple Heart for his troubles. He was not medically retired as far as I know, but received a monthly disability check for the rest of his life.
LTC Stephen C.
PO1 Darren Martin, CPT Jim Schwebach makes a point that I neglected to mention. My uncle also utilized the VA for the remainder of his life.
My father was in the Navy in WWII and participate in the Normandy invasion. He was also to part in other operations. I always noticed he received a government check every month and one day I asked him why. He said it was service related and that was all. The check was for $18.00. He did not talk about the war. One day he told me one story. His ship the USS McCook, had shit down a German plane and the pilot was in the water. Theywentvtonpuck him up. My father was a Gunners Mate do he was armed with a rifle and stood by as his friend reached out his hand to the Gernan to help him up the rope ladder. As he did, the German pulled out a Luger and killed his friend. My father said he shot and killed the German. He had tears in his eye's and said I can never forgive myself for his death. Years later I would understand as friends were lost in the Vietnam War and you could do nothing to stop it. the only person you could talk to was another Vet who understood. The day my son left for Iraq as a Cav Scout I told him a story.
