We couldn’t afford depression, only the rich had that condition. Any perceived depression went away with a paycheck, a place to sleep and free grub.

I suffered my first bout of depression on my first deployment when I took ill and had to be MEDEVACed home. Felt like I abandoned my post and my troops. Yes it made me feel bad but you learn to cope and get through it.

I've had bouts of depression since then and learned to accept that medication helps get you through it. I never wanted to depend on pills but taken the correct way they do help w/o developing a dependency.

Yes Sir! Developing dependency is fairly easy if you are not careful. When I was recovering from alcohol, counselors wanted me on pills which I refused. I believe medication for this would be the last resort for me. I was told a long time ago that the "Man" upstairs will put you through only what you can handle, I truly believe that to this day. Me, I wanted to know how much and how far the mind can accomplish without the meds while on recovery. When we are able to come to a balance in our lives, no one will or can take that away from you. It is your accomplishment and yours alone.

SGT Smith,
I don't know men. I do know that I got some low self esteem mode when I was getting divorce from my first marriage. After a few years, I was fine but I did picked up on my drinking though. Don't recall been depressed before the military. Then again, I have always been loner which some confused me of been depressed when I actually wasn't.
Now, during deployments I was so busy that I didn't have time to be depressed about anything. I don't mean to make fun of you SGT Smith. But I just think that people that are depressed have too much time in their hands...in my opinion. Then you have some individuals like myself who can be locked in room which nothing but Star Wars movies and be happy as hell.
