Anyone else watching what is going on in the South China Sea?
China is building up reefs and claiming them as part of it's territory there by extending their reach into international waters and a major shipping route. China has long claimed the Spratly and Pratas Islands but the nautical distance from the mainland to the islands was prohibitive to China actively patrolling the islands. New imagery shows that China has begun to militarize some of the manmade islands and are laying tarmac for an airstrip long enough to support military aircraft. China is also using the island's airspace as a way to extend their airspace claims. This is all important because the area is a major shipping route, is thought to contain rich oil deposits, and has non communist countries which are militarily strategic to the U.S..
In the attached news story you can hear China's military warning U.S. reconnaissance planes and requesting they leave the area.
