Do I have to be in uniform at the airport when PCS’ing? Or, am I authorized to wear civies?

I too am "old", serving on active duty as a medical officer 1975-77, but even though I was Berry Plan ("volunteering" rather than being drafted) I was proud to be in the Army and wore my uniform any time it was appropriate. The funniest happening when I was in uniform occurred when I visited the hospital where I had my surgical residency. One of my friends, a few years behind me, commented that he could never wear a uniform or salute someone. He was dressed in white pants, a white shirt, black tie and white jacket! The Chief of Surgery happened to walk by and my friend snapped to attention and said "Good morning ,Sir". The only thing missing was the salute.

CAPT (Join to see) - It's hard to blend in when most GI's have a didy/AWOL bag, they did when I served (57-63), to carry their personal items in. Some even had the branch of service emblem. Just saying.

PO2 Jack LaBarge - The protestors were anti war, and not necessarily all wars, and not necessarily socialists. Some weren't antiwar but joiners and got on the bandwagon. But back to subject, 66-70, mostly didn't wear my uniform when traveling unless my orders stated to do so. I'd been in SE Asia almost 3 years and forgot to wear the brass when I left my final place of separation...Oakland I think, and no one checked...1/2 way to Phoenix I figured out I had left off the brass... I was embarassed. Dumb ass move.

There is a very serious reason beyond AR 670-1. If your are in uniform around or in the Airport or while flying on a civilian air cmode of transit

SFC David Xanten I remember those days as well. Twenty two months with 3-21 Inf, 196th. Upon DEROSing to Ft. Lewis, and either separating or other, most dumped their Class A's. I just stuck mine in my bag. Nobody wanted any crap from fellow "Americans"!

Make sure your Uniform is not wrinkle if carrying with you. Never show up in a wrinkle Uniform.

I believe there was another incident with soldiers traveling in uniform and the orders not to wear uniforms.

Always check your PCS Orders and flight orders -They are quite specific about what you will be wearing. It might say, 'Military Uniform Required' or 'Must travel in Class A; etc...'
