Yes, you salute officers from allied nations.
Return any salute you receive.

Yes - if you recognize them as such. The cavart being you use US military rules in your saluting - not theirs. Such as when an NCO is in charge of a formation and turns the formation (formally) over to another NCO - they salute.

Also, warrant officers in the British forces are considered senior noncommissioned officers above the rank of sergeant majors. As such, their services do not render a salute, whereas the American forces do consider warrant officers as officers. It was always more impactful when British forces conduct joint training and differences, especially in warrant officers gaining entry to the officer’s club.

"if you recognize them as such."
When allied officers are assigned to US military bases, they are generally told to just assume that Americans simply don't recognize their rank insignia (even when it is identical to ours). This polite fiction avoids conflict and embarrassment due to the fact the the US military (especially the Army and Air Force) are totally derelict in teaching military courtesy.

Yes. What I always found interesting is that if you are a POW, you even salute enemy officers.

Absolutely! As they do for us as well. Never had any issues with Troops of other countries.

Friendly countries...yes--provided you can figure out who they are. I got so anxious over NATO relationshios I started saluting American Airline pilots.

there are so many variables ! at SHAPE, no saluting so as not to attract attention from observers was the rule .

Near the barracks for the Ft. Bliss NCOA there is a detachment of Japanese soldiers. Their officers wore the US equivalent rank ( 2LT, CPT etc). We weren’t briefed on what to do so I saluted an officer wearing ASU brass CPT rank. He quickly, and somewhat sheepishly, returned it.
