I have been in the Army over 3 years now. I went to S1 to build up my ribbons for the board and when I asked about the GWOT they told me they stopped awarding it in early 2016. I enlisted June of 2016. Did I miss the cutoff?! If so I think it is weird that there are Soldiers still fighting terrorism in the middle east but they don’t award it anymore because the “War on Terrorism is over”. Just wondering I have been curious for awhile now and I can’t seem to find anything on google.

Found my answer.

. Effective 30 March 2016, the GWOTEM is no longer authorized to be awarded for service in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. Soldiers serving in Iraq and/or Syria are only authorized the Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal (IRCM) after this date. The GWOTEM is authorized for direct support deployments, such as Kuwait or Qatar.

1. GWOTSM: The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (GWOTSM) was established by Executive Order 13289, 12 March 2003. It is authorized for award to members of the Armed Forces of the United States who have participated in or served in support operations in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) operations outside of the designated areas of eligibility (AOE) for the GWOTEM (see GWOTEM Q&A), on or after 11 September 2001 to a future date to be determined. Battalion commanders and commanders of separate units have the authority to award the GWOTSM for approved operations to units and personnel within his or her command. Service members must be assigned, attached, or mobilized to a unit supporting designated operations for 30 consecutive days or for 60 nonconsecutive days, or meet one of the following criteria:

a. Initial award of the GWOTSM. Limited to airport security operations (from 27 September 2001 through 31 May 2002) and Soldiers who supported Operations NOBLE EAGLE, ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF).

b. All Soldiers on active duty, including Reserve Component Soldiers mobilized, or National Guard Soldiers activated on or after 11 September 2001 to a date to be determined having served 30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days are authorized the GWOTSM.

c. Service members may be awarded both the GWOTEM and the GWOTSM if they meet the criteria for both awards; however, the qualifying period used to establish eligibility for one award cannot be used to justify eligibility for the other award. The GWOTSM will be worn after the GWOTEM and both will directly follow the Kosovo Campaign Medal (KCM) (that is, KCM, GWOTEM, GWOTSM, Korean Defense Service Medal (KDSM), and so forth.)

d. Subsequent awards. Only one award of the GWOTSM may be authorized to any individual; therefore, second and subsequent awards will not be awarded.

As a former Promotions NCO, I refer you to the Awards Regulations. Also make sure you have copies of ALL schools, medals, and awards. Check your 201 file and ensure everything which count for points is actually IN your records. Good Luck with the Promotions Board! Know your General Orders!

Thank you for the response! Fortunately I did pass the board, but here is my story, somebody told me once I graduated basic that a month into my unit I would get a GWOT not sure what it was. When they updated my SRB I had all
awards and Certificates, I was good once I asked about the GWOT they pretty much said no. My S1 has been confused a few times but what they said didn’t make since to me. It seems I have my answer now though!

Do they still award the GWOT?

You are your own best S1. Go to the Army HRC awards FAQ page for awards you think you qualify for.

The GWOTS medal can be awarded at the O5 level for anything done to support the GWOT.

SSG (Join to see) - respectfully, you might need to read a bit closer, particularly as the appropriate regulation is AR 600-8-22. It is dated 05MAR19, with an effective date of 05APR19. See link below.
https://armypubs.army.mil/epubs/DR_pubs/DR_a/pdf/web/ARN18147_R600_8_22_admin2_FINAL.pdf
(*note, I’m genuinely curious as to what you’re looking up so as to not find this information)

On the FIRST page, under SUMMARY of CHANGE, of special relevance to the issue at hand, it states, “Updates criteria and operations for the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals (paras 2–20 and 2–21)”

Best of luck

Did you check the regulation or just use "google"...? I see one respondent referenced the "HRC website" but he and you should have both looked in the regulations. This will serve you moving forward; especially if you are preparing for the board.

SGT, I have passed the board but I was just wondering if there was a quick answer to see if I was eligible or not. I have read HRC and the AR which is what confuses me. To me (maybe I’m not looking hard enough) it looks like they still award it. But if that is the case why is my S1 saying it isn’t awarded anymore... Also the AR is dated 2015 I dont know if it has been updated.

SSG (Join to see) use APD, they will always have the most updated version. Look in the reg and see what it says (you are eligible). Be sure to know what you are looking for (the GWOTe and GWOTs are different). Then email your S1, quote and cite the reg, and ask them to clarify. Say something along the lines of; “S1, according to AR 600-8-22 (5 March, 2019); 2-2 I qualify for the GWOTSM based on subsection (g). Please update my records accordingly so my SRB will reflect.”

The regulation (AR 600-8-22; 2-2: g) is very clear on the qualifications. The most recent and up to date one is always on https://armypubs.army.mil/.

SSG (Join to see) - Maybe so or perhaps I am misunderstanding you. Regardless, I believe in empowering people. If you don't have soldier's already some day you will. I highly recommend that you teach them to think critically and show them how to answer their own questions rather than just provide the answers to them. It will serve you as a leader and it will make your soldiers better as well.

The GWOT may not be an award that many people know about, but it is still an important military award. Many soldiers who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan will be eligible for the GWOT if they meet specific criteria. The GWOT is given to members of both the Army and Navy, and it recognizes soldiers who were injured during combat operations in a foreign country between September 11th, 2001, and December 31st, 2009. Something else that distinguishes the GWOT from other awards is that there are no restrictions on how many times you can win it. Now I need to write an essay about it but first I prefer reading reviews at https://youressayreviews.com/is-edubirdie-legit/ website about those writers who assist students in their homework.
