Sen. Charles E. Schumer, a Democratic Senator from New York, is renewing his push in suggesting U.S. Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis, a Staten Island hero, receive the Medal of Honor.
Do you feel it appropriate for politicians to get involved in military awards? Seems like it puts the awards system into one involving politicians rather than merit... His initial award has already been reviewed and upgraded (in 2019) to the Distinguished Service Cross.

I don't have a problem with it, but my asking for a review of an award better be held with just as much weight.

What I wish They'd Do Is Have Some Manner Of Qualifications To Be ALLOWED To Run For ANY Political Office. Even To Run For The Presidency All One Needs Is To Be Born In The United States And At Least 36 Years Of Age ~~ That's A "Qualification"?
Even A Truck Driver Has To Study And Pass To Qualify For Their Commercial Drivers License ~ And That Required More Effort Than Becoming The President Of The United States.

And If She had To Qualify For That Position,
When The Result Were In, We'd Qualify Her Under The Clause Of Insanity.

If his actions merit the award, he should be recognized.

Maj Kim Patterson - I did not mean the post to be political and still do not think it meets the criteria as an political opinion. I don't feel it is appropriate for politicians or anybody outside of the military system to get involved upgrading military awards. Just because a person thinks they have some sort of psuedo expertise does not mean thy should be able to interfer with the system. However, in this case, the upgrade request was probably political I doubt that Sen, Schunmer would be fighting to get an award upgrade for a cowboy in Montana!

(Note that I said constituents, not voters. An elected official at any level is supposed to serve everyone in his or her constituency, not just the ones who voted for him or her.)

1) I don't know anything about the person in question. Is Schumer really fighting for the upgrade--ie, really putting the weight of his office behind it, or is he just asking them to take another look? And if he is putting the weight of his office behind it, is there some argument that the award was unreasonably denied?
2) I'm sure he wouldn't be fighting for someone in another state, except in an extraordinary situation where a whole bunch of Senators thought the award was unreasonably denied. His job description is to serve as a representative of the people in his state, not the people from other states.

Politicians Have Been Pushing For Awards For Their Constituents, Since The Founding Of The Military.
Some Were Justified Some Not, During The Civil War There Were So Many Medals Of Honor That Were Awarded For Political Reasons , That Year’s Later A lot Of Them Were Down Graded Or Taken Away .
The Subject Of Awards Has Been Beaten To Death On This Forum So Many Times.
Anyone Who Deserves An Award For An Outstanding Achievement Or An Act Of Valor Should Be Awarded The Highest Award Possible
If A Politician Choses To Advocate For A Constituent To Be Awarded Any Medal , They Have To Do An Investigation Into The Actions Of The Individual During The Incident.

Yea Right ! The Government Agents Are A Joke, They Collect A Paycheck And Don’t Do Anything About The Conditions On The Reservation.
The Tribal Police Are So Stretched Out They Can’t Be Everywhere.
Like All Police Departments They Are Overworked And Under Paid !
The Alcohol Is Purchased In The Bars In The City Of Hardin And The Drugs Come From Out Of Billings. Both Cities Are Very Close To The Reservation.
When I Was There One Of My Friends Neighbors Was High On PCP Laced Marijuana And It Took Five Police Officers To Take Him Into Custody.

SPC James Neidig SPC James Pretty hard to police 2.2 million acres with a population of 7,900! The rate of Reservations crime is much higher than that of the average US city. Crow Agency ranks in the 4th percentile for safety, meaning it is safer than 4% of cities but less safe than 96%. This analysis applies only to Crow Agency's official city boundaries.

Most Of The Crimes I Have Heard About On Most Reservations Is Drug And Alcohol Related.
Spousal Abuse While Intoxicated Is A Very Common Occurrence.
Theft Is Also A Common Crime To Support Their Habit.
DUI Is Also A Common Problem .
The Tribal Police Are Doing The Best They Can Do With The Resources They Have And As You Posted It Is A Very Large Reservation With A lot Of Isolated Homes That In Most Cases Are Miles Away From Any Other Home.
