Yes. How you treat your waitress or the toll booth lady when no one is watching is an excellent sign of your character.

Sir, I've heard similar advice as well. It's a good rule-of-thumb, but specifically I find it good dating advice too; how your date treats others is an indication of how you will be treated. I'll certainly be telling my kids that when it's time.

Some people in the military think that when they hit the Senior ranks that they are above everyone and that some tasks are beneath them. I understand that there are only so many hours in the day and as you progress in rank you are pulled in multiple directions to get the Units mission done. But I always try and make the effort to partake in unit training and to engage multiple Soldiers a day so I can get a feel of how they feel the unit is going.

When I was a PSG for the CGs Staff PLT, I had the G3 SGM tell me to put him on the road guard roster. When I explained to him that we had plenty of people, and he would not be needed, he told me there was no reason he COULDN'T do it. I tried the "you've done yours" with him, and he responded "yep, just means I am the most experienced and therefore NOT putting me on the roster would be a waste of talent." That was a great SGM. He made it really easy for me to get the other staff sections on board - if SGM is out doing road guard, then you SFCs can, too!

I would not have expected him to do road guard - after all he DOES have a lot of important things to do. But I am exceptionally thankful he did. (There were many other similar instances like this.)
