When i was a FTO on our police department I always tought young rookies "A pistol is only used to get to your rifle." There is a time and a place for long guns. It looks like these guys came ready for a gun fight.

If you travel the world, you will see a lot more/better security measures that are blatantly on display. Most world nations don't cater to snowflakes who get their feeling hurt by everything. If you get scared by automatic weaponry, you best stay away from Israel, or Mexico City airport, for that matter.

It was seeing Mexican 'military' with automatic weapons a few years ago as we prepared for a visit to Tulum that was upsetting to me.

I was just in Tulum two weeks ago. No cops at all. The whole place was beautified and catered to the cruise ship crowd. There were a few "dress uniform" police down town but nothing out of the ordinary. Even in the "hood" it was very sparkly and everyone was making sure you (and your dollars!) felt welcome.

SP5 Joel O'Brien - COME ON DOWN. Everythings very clean and safe and the cruise ships have dropped millions into the area. You wouldn't recognize the place. The locals are being paid to the point that they're above poverty so thats a move in the right direction and the food is great.

The only reason it would bother me is because I think that it's an outdated idea. I'd rather see them carrying ARs than MP5s

Remember tho - cops aren't as accurate as in the movies. A stray/missed 5.56mm round is going to do a lot more collateral damage than a stray 9mm round...

I agree PO3 Murphy, no one is as accurate as the movies. And I get far more training with my weapons in LE than I ever did in the military. I agree that for LE an AR15/M4 application is probably more appropriate than an MP5 but that also depends on exactly what the officer is doing. On several of the tactical team you may have M4s, 12 gauge, MP5 and .308 as well as every conceivable configuration of handgun.

PO3 Donald Murphy - I did a little quick research (that I should have done before commenting), and found that unlike earlier subguns the MP5 is capable of semi-auto fire, which makes me a lot more comfortable with that particular submachine gun. I've watched plenty of soldiers shoot (I started Army side), so I'm aware how hard it is to be accurate. I'm still of the mind however that the subguns time has come and gone.
