Do you have a specific preference between Windows or Linux Ubuntu Server Operating System?

Simple and to the point. How hard would the transition be, I wonder.

If you don't have much command line experience in Linux, you will be on google a lot. I found that being able to do everything I needed without moving my hand over to a mouse was great. There's no fancy graphics to look at but it's a clean efficient way of running a server.

Any purpose. I'm asking to hear from the RP community. Also, the more questions I ask like this, the easier it is to network with Veterans in the same field.

For me it depends one what I would use it for. I use Windows for everyday PC needs and some security, Linux I use for most of my security tools (I prefer Red Hat over Ubuntu though). When it comes to servers, this depends on what you intend to serve.

Yeah, I'm just asking about servers.

When it comes to servers, Linux has always proven to be more stable and they required fewer reboots/downtime. For personal use though, I've given up on the tinkering as I am older and I have a wife and kids at home. It's already enough work to serve as their 24 hr tech support. Still, at work I use both OS types on a regular basis. But I do so virtually. The only servers I create are security related (Nessus, backdoors, etc...) which do not require a significant length of service.

Contrary to popular belief, this thread is regarding Server OS, not Desktop.

SGT (Join to see) - Sorry about that, it was late at night for me and I misread your initial post. In the past, I used a light install, no desktop environment CLI only, as my HTPC server for my house. I preferred this because of the low hard ware footprint and it was rock solid stable compared to the Windows Home Server that was available then (2010). Over its 3 year life, the server never failed once.

I've heard that sysadmin and finance can go really well. I don't care much for that though.

It can be boring but depending on what specialty you go into it can be really challenging and rewarding. I run a virtual farm and some of the issue you come across can really be fun to solve.

SGT (Join to see) - Well i personally do virtualization. There are times when its boring but thats mainly because i work small buisness so there isnt always something going on besides basic maint.

Yes, there is a lot more software available for Windows compared to Mac. There is some programs that can be interchanged Windows to Mac and Mac to Windows. Windows was originally IBM's answer to compete with Mac.
