My tank platoon was attached with an Infantry Mech Battalion. We called the ALOC to train off the camp. Things went well with different formations. We stopped to eat MREs and parked the tanks in a herringbone formation. I noticed a tap tap on my boot. It was an old goat herder who wanted water. This old man had maneuvered 40 goats into a formation of 4 M1s without any of our 16 soldiers noticing.

We come in Peace...Shoot to kill.
From an old song. Parody of star Trek.

I was the range NCOIC, we'd finished up M16 qualification at Gowen Field range in Idaho late Sunday afternoon. I got on the phone and called in to "Cinder Cone" to get range control to come out and clear us off the range - telephone line was down, so back up, radio. I called range control and immediately got an answer back. I gave my range number, told them we were done and ready for them to close down our range. There was a brief silence on the radio, range control came back and said there was no one on that range on a Sunday. The OIC and I looked at each other and I replied, giving our unit, range number, packet number. There was a questioned response in return restating all small arms ranges were non operational on Sunday, then a pause, and he then ask where I was. I stated range number, Gowen Field Training Area. The voice came back, "This is range control, FT. Benning, Ga". Needless to say both the OIC and I were dumb founded. I replied our landline was out and if they could please call Range Control, Gowen Field (giving them the number), and have some one come to clear us off the range. "Stand By". A couple minutes later, "Cinder Cone has been notified, please remain on range, a range control officer is on the way, Range Control, Ft. Benning, out". I "WILCO" my reply and in about 15 minutes range control was there to clear us off. I've never cleared a range that way before, or never since.
