Do you ever watch Wipe Out or Bullseye or Survivor and wonder if the competitors would cut it in the military? While a few competitors have served, most have not. They all seem to complain a lot even if they are in shape? What are your opinions?

I watch Red Bull videos sometimes, Sir. I wonder why some of these folks aren't military. There's some potential HALO guys right there. I'd love to ask one of them. "Dude...you could do this A LOT! Sign here."

These folks tend to not be conformists and "by the book" types, which is why the do some of the things they do. Granted SOCOM has it's share of adrenalin junkies, but there's a lot more to it than just the willingness to do some crazy-ass stuff.

Very astute observation. Some of my Tough Mudder friends (I don't race) are very fit and they like the challenge, but abhor routine and claim they get easily bored by the mundane. They would not fit in well

Recruiting from some of these adventure based activities might be a good idea.

Do you think civilian thrill seekers who participate in challenge races and competitions would cut it in the military?

Physically I think some of them could cut it. The standards in the Army are not that difficult. I have competed in some obstacle course/endurance runs and I cannot keep up with many and I am an above 300 APFT guy.

I think they can handle the physical part initially. Not sure they can sustain the routine of the hours on versus time off. Think the bureaucracy would defeat many of the faint of heart.

That is probably especially true since they are thrill seekers and adventure junkies. If they are looking for full time, high octane operations and constantly on the go, they would be very disappointed. I remember getting new soldiers who honestly thought the Army was like Call of Duty and similar video games. They did not last long for various reasons, but the main issue was they could not handle the other parts of being a soldier. It is a total person concept and we are expected to be proficient in so many areas. I agree that bureaucracy would be a major killer for them.
