Tanks are obsolete, until one side abandons them-- then, for the side that kept them, they become super-weapons.
We'll always need tanks, but I also think we limit ourselves with the notion of the one Main Battle Tank. We should be more willing to explore things like light tanks and/or assault guns, especially for Airborne forces. Things that are smaller, faster, cheaper... maybe not as tough as a tank but could sure help infantry advance in an assault where a full dedicated tank isn't needed.
