This question is for all RallyPoint members, active, reserve, guard, vet and retired!

Do you wear your dog tags daily? Only when your deployed? Only since you got out?

In my own service it is unusual for SM's to wear their's daily. Often they are kept in the mobility folder.

I only wear mine when I am drilling, AT, or deployed. And honestly I probably should wear them but I don't.

I wear them when I go to training. I am in the USAR but they always hang on a bed post. I retire in less than 5 years. I missed the P38 era. Congratulations to all who served and don't forget the wounded and the fallen. I lost my 1SG in May, 2009. Rest in Peace 1SG Blue Rowe D. CO ,426th Civil Affairs BN, Upland, Calif- USAR!!

24 years on active duty never wore them but maybe in boot camp and honestly have no idea what ever happened to them.

Being on active duty and having my first duty station overseas, I became accustomed to wearing them no matter what. After my recent deployment and returning to garrison, I've stopped wearing them outside of work, but I keep a spare set in my car at all times so they are never far.

I wear my dog tags everyday, except when I have been stationed at Commands that specifically have told me not to wear them for OPSEC purposes. The biggest issue that I have is that no one knows how to UPDATE the tags. Mine are from boot camp and still have my maiden name and "no religious preference" even though I am Catholic. This is a big deal religion wise for me. However, I also have a red tag so that is another reason why.

PO1 (Join to see), I know everywhere I have been, we just went to Personnel/Deployment Readiness to get new ones. Some places you could just walk up, others you have to bring a letter from the UDM/Shirt/Supervisor/Someone saying why you needed them (lost, new name, religious preference, etc). Check with your deployment folks and they *should* know.

TSgt Joshua Copeland, I was the Mobilization Officer at my last command and for our mobilized/IA guys (and girls!) we would notate if they did not have dog tags. They would then be issued by the NMPS (Navy Mobilization and Processing Sites) but that is only if you are being deployed. Updating the red tag is a bit easier because we can just go to medical.

PO1 (Join to see), I would ask around the personnel type folks and see if they have the machine. Maybe the navy thinks they are saving money by only "fixing" them when you go down range.

Worst case, you can always get them done online (please dont) or at a surplus store.

TSgt Joshua Copeland, well I got the "official" word that this base does not reissue or update dog tags. However, I can go to the Navy Exchange and pay to have them updated myself. Gotta love it!

I'm in an arctic environment. The metal can cause contact frostbite.

I called Fort Drum , NY my home for 5years and no matter how cold (and it did get very cold)still had to wear them. Many a night on guard duty in extreme Sub-zero temps and not once did we ever have a case of contact frostbite.

Understand, but sub zero is nothing here. It gets -60 during some parts of the year. Most of the time from late September until early June or so, it is sub zero. The average is about -20 or so. We actually have cg approved moderation of 670-1

CPT (Join to see) what does the locally approved modification to AR 670-1 say about airborne operations? I also believe that you are mistaken about 550 being used to replace the chain; what you probably mean is that the 550 be gutted and the chain is threaded through it. Unless you are talking about using the length of 550 as an "arctic necklace". An additional note - the G.I. Dog Tag Chain & Silencer Kit happens to be an issue item, and you should be able to get it through your unit supply room.

I have also taken the time to check out the US Army Alaska - Arctic Warrior Standards Pamphlet - USARAK Pamphlet 600-2. Paragraph 5 covers the uniform and uniform modifications. On page 9 it states - (8) Two identification tags will be worn at all times during daily activities, around the neck, beneath the T-shirt on long and short chains (except when safety considerations apply). So my question is this - The modification that you refer to must be in a "safety considerations" policy letter, if so which policy letter is that? I have not been able to locate the letter and I believe that all of those letters are posted on the appropriate web page. I will also back this up with the packing list for the Northern Warfare Training Center's packing list, and the instructions about what an "arctic necklace" consist of.

The other is my response because my job causes a safety hazzard and I would hate to have 1 and also let them get damaged
