I am really enjoying the new hot weather uniforms we have but I'm not a fan of the Patrol Cap. I have been in long enough to recall the old caps that didn't have an pocket. Has anyone used the pocket in their cap? I wouldn't mind a thinner cap to be honest.

That's where I keep my radio report templates (9 line, salute, UXO, etc...)

I've utilized it to hold a spare nine line or other info cards and maps that I might find handy.

The map flap has been part of the BDU cap since at least 1997 when I joined. And yes, I have used it... for maps.

SGT Donna Millar - CPT (Join to see) is no longer an LT. I have to assume he not only knows what a map is, he can actually orient it. (Using it... well... I mean he's not a Major, yet, so that one is iffy....)

Yeah wasn’t necessarily suggesting the CPT didn’t know what a map is. Just other solidifies who may read this in the future (read that as ‘young’). I’ve seen posts on here several years old with some really unique views coming from the next generation. Getting rid on Drill & Ceremonies comes to mind.

SGT Donna Millar - Roger. I was just taking an opportunity for a little good-natured tweaking of our fine Officers.

I never use this pocket because anything you put in there will eventually get sweat stains. Additionally it isn't practical, you have to take off your cover and bend it around to get your items out. I fold my cover and put it in my cargo pocket so I always have it with me so using the pocket wouldn't work very well. I looked at some BDU covers I had on a shelf in the closet and they didn't have one. I guess I chalk this up to the same category as the ear flap the winter BDU covers had. It's there but I never used it.

I remember those ears flaps. I've only ever seen them use in the movies.

When I was the student 1SG for a day at BLC on a very cold snowy day in Utah I had everyone put their ear flaps down. Another student asked if I could do that. I said I'm the (student) 1SG aren't I? At that moment the skies opened and I ascended to become a Warrant Officer. Seriously though the cadre didn't say anything one way or another. I'll agree with anyone who says they flaps looked less than professional but it never made sense to be cold when there was an immediately available option to take the edge off. Thankfully the Army is better these days about allowing a watch cap to be worn in place of a patrol cap.

I remember having a pocket in some of my old BDU patrol caps and used them for maps, even a copy of the company phone roster (when pay phones were all over the place etc.

I just cut it all out so it's a single layer hat like the ol BDU one was.
Maps don't fit, smart cards go in your rack, evasion charts/blood chits need to be more secure. So the pocket is good for????????? Heat retention, that's about it.
