SGT Michael Mason TIG resets upon reduction and TIG starts at the new effective date of rank. So it would be the same as if the NCO was never promoted. There are edge cases in the regulation.

AR 600-8-19:
Secondary zone
46 months TIS + 6 months TIG
Primary zone
70 months TIS + 16 months TIG
Mandatory list integration
82 months TIS + 22 months TIG
MSG Intermediate Care Technician
Per AR 600-8-19, Table 3-1

Secondary zone 6 months TIG
Primary Zone is 16 months TIG.

Secondary Zone TIG requires a Waiver. As you were reduced per an Article 15, you are not authorized a Waiver.

Also, if I may add, since you were just reduced in rank...I would recommend you focus on getting better in the eyes of your Command since they can easily turn around and mark NO for recommendation to see the Board.

If doing better has been something you've been doing all your life, then the Article 15 would not have happened. And, you do need to focus on doing better because right now the Article 15 IS defining you. I say this with 25 years of experience with Commanders of all types in all types of units at all types of locations. You can build hundreds of roads, you can save hundreds of children, you can build hundreds of schools, but you set one vehicle on fire (an example), and that is what people will remember. I have no dog in this hunt as to whether you deserve another shot at SSG or not....but knowing how the system of Command can be played.....right now I recommend you focus on the steak and not the peas. You also need to take into account that, depending on what this Article 15 and Reduction was for (I don't need to know), and what your upcoming NCOER states, you may face the QMP Board.

MSG (Join to see) you don’t know me nor the circumstances. Like I said, I have been doing better my whole life. Your experience isn’t my experience. I was asking for regulation not your opinion. The military is one small Organization that makes up the world. There is life after the this. Regardless whether a QMP board comes or not I’m still standing right now. Thank you for your service.

SGT Michael Mason - Weird reply to earnest advice.

I get what MSG (Join to see) was trying to impart, You are asking for information that is easily found in regulation, and as a dutiful NCO tried to key you into what happens to a lot of Art.15 recipients when they go up for promotion again (i.e. the Art.15 becomes a center piece for board members and the CDR).

The point of RallyPoint is you get access to the unsolicited advice of service members with a collective hundreds of years of experience in the military (such as what I am giving now). If you didn't want the advice in the first place, try Google next time.

But you are right, your experience is not the same as probably most of us. But it is for some of us, and if not, we for sure have probably seen your particular circumstances play out dozens of times.

However, I will note that a previously promoted SSG purporting "MQ" who doesn't know AR 600-8-19 is the regulatory guidance for promotions and that APD is publicly accessible through Google and hosts all regulations for the Army doesn't strike me as someone who is prepared for another promotion. But then again, you didn't ask for my opinion.

Which is ok, because you work for someone else, some other set of SFC, 1SG, CSM, CPT, etc. Your lack of development doesn't reflect on me, but rather them. Interestingly enough you asked RP and not them.

Short answer: 16 months.

If you've had a demotion in rank, then you must meet full TIG/TIS requirements* - it's no different than if you were a newly promoted E-5 except you aren't eligible for a secondary zone promotion (you must meet full TIG/TIS eligibility - waivers aren't allowed after being demoted).

By your question, it indicates you already know the answer to the other question commonly asked - "Do I have to go before a promotion board again?"
