Does anyone remember the USAFE football teams?

<p>I was at Ramstein from 81-84 and we had full contact, American-style football teams. We had teams in Zaragosa, Torrejon, Bitburg, Hahn, Spanghalem, Zweibrucken, Wiesbaden, Upper Heyford, Mildenhall, and I believe Lakenheath, oh and Sembach. </p><p><br></p><p>I remember us beating Sembach one season 74-7 and 50-6.</p><p><br></p><p>There was also fast pitch softball, basketball and a few other sports. The talent level was very high and it was kind of like in the movie M.A.S.H. Players were recruiting as they came into the theatre. </p>

I'm pretty sure RAF Lakenheath had a team. There were one or two guys that were recruited but it could have been for Mildenhall. As I recall that was a pretty big deal, 79-82

And yeah Mildenhall was very good and we played against them near London. I loved London and am grateful for the chance to live in Germany, although I was disallowed from giving blood after being stationed there because of Mad Cow.

I played wide receiver on the USAFE (1979) Championship Lakenheath team. The two years that I was there (1979-80), Lakenheath was UK champs both years and USAFE champs. I don’t have any knowledge of recruitment. I was not. The best player in the league those days was Chops Chambers. He played for many years at Lakenheath and later Chicksands. Chops was, and still is a good friend. He never mentioned being recruited. Billy Allen, another star running back was recruited……..to Florida State. He was later drafted by the New Orlean Saints.

Your post reminded me of Ft Ord in California after it closed. It was my first active duty assignment and when I see the videos of the place now it just bothers me. I also think about all the grass cutting and rock painting we did to keep the CSM's area squared away and what he would say now.
Glad I'm not on that detail.

I remember these teams, I thought Chad Hennings (Dallas Cowboys) and a few others played for these teams on and off (but i could be wrong). We also had German American Football which was pretty entertaining as well. I played for the Mainz Golden Eagles for a few games in the mid 80's.

I only spent 2 years in the UK (RAF Croughton, 1981-1983). But I followed the Upper Heyford football team, as one of my co-workers in our shop played for them. Upper Heyford won the USAFE championship both years that I was there (1981 and 1982 football seasons). I have a great interest in the military football programs that were played overseas. I've seen photos of U.S. military troops playing football games while in the UK and other places, during WWII. I came to realize just how big of a deal it was to U.S. troops to have the football programs.
The first USAFE championship game was played in 1946 (per a championship program from the 1973 season)!

I played at Lakrnheath in 1979 & 80. We were UK champions in both years and USAFE champions in 79. We had a lot of talent at RB. Two in particular were Chops Chambers and Billy Allen. Chops was a ledger in UK football. He owned every record. Billy Allen received a scholarship to Florida State. He held the Gator Bowl record for the longest kick off return for many years. He was drafted by the Saints in the 6th round. He was released on the final cut. There were many other great football players on those teams.

I played on that team at corner back, I subbed for chops at RB, we had an all USAFE receiver also, I think his name was Struggs any body out there remember

I was at Ramstein from 82 - 84. We won 3 CSC championships and 2 USAFE titles. I played QB #10.

I remember a very long run you made at Wiesbaden and traveled to Mildenhall and most of the teams in Germany. Oh man, I remember. You. I remember you winning 74-7 over Sembach. Add me up, if you like, Um that fastpitch pitcher lost both of his arms due to an infection, while in the hospital. He had transplant but they failed him. So sad for him. 1stSgt Boyd Ouden

Don't forget Rhein Mein in Frankfort. They had a receiver named Richard Darden, who also pitched for their baseball team that was awesome. They had some pretty good basketball teams too.
