Having completed all the army training to be an instructor, and earning the Ordnance Corps Senior Instructor rating, let me assure you that an instructor must embody AR 670-1 and TRADOC Regulation 350-6. Hands in the pockets is a huge NO-GO.

Last time I looked AR meant Army Regulation which means all uniformed personal wearing the US ARMY name tape.  It isn't AR-IE (Army Regulation - Instructors Exempted) 670-1. ;)

Nope, I instructed at the schoolhouse at Fort Eustis, we were still Soldiers  whether on the podium, on the floor, or at the gym, AR 670-1 applies to all Soldiers, regardless of rank or position unless otherwise directed by the Commander. And it had better be in writing. There is no good reason to have your hands in your pockets while teaching. No operational requirement such as a beard for SF Operators, and it isn't a safety hazard such as tsking off your ID tags while on top of a helicopter. Have her show you where in AR 670-1 or a local SOP or Command directive where it states that. If she can't do either of those, then she is just plain wrong and should be an NCO enough to admit it. I have slipped and done it, and I have caught myself a few times and my Soldiers have caught me a time or two, to which I said roger that and pulled my hands out of my pockets and made a conscious effort to not forget.

I must have missed that day when I was ABIC and SGTIC....HA.. yeah the answer is NO just because you are an instuctor doesn't mean you can put your hands in your pocket....I am going to assume since you are a SPC asking you are in WLC( i could be wrong)?

Does being an instructor exempt you from parts of 670-1?

I'm in this CBRN class for two weeks, and I corrected this NCO on her having pens in her pocket. She also had her hands in her pocket but I didnt mention that as well. Basically all ate up. Im on that if you walk by the standard and it becomes the standard so I dont mind correcting who so ever. She told me that intructors can do that. Im guessing it may be a policy memo that allows her to do so. Its really bothering me.

Instructors are not above AR 670-1, however while Instructing they are permitted to put their hands in their pockets to keep from talking with their hands and distracting the students. I have been an Instructor and earned Master Instructor. As for the pens in the pocket that could be wrong I did not see the actual incident. It is permitted "IN THE CLASS ROOM" for the Instructor to put their hands in their pockets.

That is a tool that a lot of instructors use so they do not use too many hand gestures to keep the focus on the presentation.

SFC Day, I disagree, not a lot of instructors. If you need to put your hands in your pockets to keep them from flailing around during a presentation, those instructors need to practice their presentations more. Use a laser pointer, yard stick, whatever to point things out of a board in necessary, but just stuffing your hands in your pockets is not the answer.

Yes, a lot of instructors do it. No it isn't correct. As stated above, AR and DA PAM 670-1 apply to everyone. Doesn't matter if your on the podium or in the motorpool. Hands only go in pockets if you are retrieving something from them.

SFC Day is correct in what he says. When I went through ABIC I can clearly remember our instructor bring up the fact that it is ok to do it to break the habit of hand movement becuase it is a distracter. But at the same time you will start a new habit of hands in the pockets.

But in my opinion putting your hands in your pockets is a distracter as well.

Sometimes hand guestures are good they put emphasis on certian things. Just avoid doing them by your head and lower ab area.
