Do you feel there is still an "inner service rivalry" between the Service Branches or that any one branch thinks they are Superior?

RP Members what do you think - be honest and professional in your responses please! Thank you

With all the deployments and joint operations that we have been involved in over the last 15 plus years of war and prior to that as well, aren't we all part of something a little bigger than our own service branches? We represent the United States of America in so many ways! We represent the freedom that all of the American citizens enjoy, to include ourselves!

For myself, I think is great to that we have the Navy/Army/Air Force rivalry on the football field and other sports, but I think it is important to realize the importance of joint operations and synchronization among the service branches.

I don't think that anyone branch is better than the other. That is my personal feeling.

They all have their specific missions, training philosophies, challenges, and characteristics that make them unique and special, but does that make them inferior or superior to the other service branches?

I'm sorry if I didn't tag some of the specific service branches!

LOL! Of course! The Army is best at large missions and holding ground! The Marines are best at storming the beach and being the tip of the spear! The Navy are best at taking the Marines wherever they need to go! The Air Force is best at flying B-52's, and Coasties are best at pretty much everything else! Hooah! Ooh-Rah! Hoo-Yah!

Each branch would love to hold that honor however without the other we become less effective as a cohesive unit. We love to bash each other but we know it's just a game. If a P.J dropped down to rescue, a Army, Marine, Navy, or AF; it's not the name plate but an American. Civilians never understand us & after 20 yrs we don't understand them.

I know some Marines think they are superior to the Navy. One Marine told this sailor he was in the men's department of the Navy. I informed him that he was just a sea-going bellhop. the SEALs are the men's department. But regardless of the uniform, we all fought the same country. I salute all my brothers and sisters in any U.S. uniform.

I think this joke is necessary for this thread...

If you tell a soldier to "secure" a building, he will set up a perimeter wire and establish patrols to keep bad guys out.

If you tell a sailor to "secure" a building, he will turn off the lights, lock the doors and go home.

If you tell a Marine to "secure" a building, he will bust through the door and kill everyone inside.

If you tell an airman to "secure" a building, he will take out a two-year lease with an option to buy.

;-)

My personal experience of serving with 'joint service' commands highlighted the differences between members of the various services (routines, usage of different acronyms, and the like). However, I believe much of this is due to the varied training backgrounds and routines of those services. I see no particular service as being 'better' than any other. I do see members of those services preferring their own branches to the others, more than likely because that is how they have been trained and adapted.

Of course there is inter service rivalry and I think it is healthy; just as within the Services there is organizational rivalry. It builds pride and competence and the "feeling of I/my service/organisation is the best". When the "flag goes up" it's my experience that "rivalry" really makes us a better joint force because no-one wants to feel they didn't do their part or best. Who ever wants to finish 2nd? It's this "I'm best that makes this the best fighting force in the World - the implications are too overwhelming to consider otherwise.

I'm reminded of my first experience as an artillery forward observer with an American infantry unit in Viet Nam. Most of it was with the ARVN or RF/PFs. It was the 173rd Airborne. The operation was to sweep a valley that was just out of range for their organic 105's. My battery was 8in/175mm. I reported to the command section and introduced myself to the CO. About that time one of the company commanders comes up and looks me over and says "This guy's a leg! Can he even shoot his rifle let alone adjust artillery?" My response to him was "Sir, I shot expert with the mousegun and we'll revisit the rest of your question when you give me a call for artillery fire." Yes, there's intra service repartee even in combat.
