It is my experience that in about one year from graduating Tech school an Airman Basic (E1) will have attained the rank of Senior Airmen (E4); but still be far from the Professional Airmen that they should be. should the AF extend the TIG promotion requirements of the Junior Enlisted?

Yes, education is not the only measure of maturity. Time and experience are needed to compliment education in the maturation process.

Air Force has issues with their career fields requirements. When I was a SRA E-4 I had more responsibilities and lot more training to to achieve before I could make E-5 than other career fields. So people was getting promoted faster than ones with more time and grade because of the level of their training.

Yes 100% they are making E2 mistakes at E4 and sometimes even E5 all because they took a test but are not yet an ideal leader or even out of the lower enlisted stage.

1 year is crazy unless they are getting the Medal of Honor. I think mine was 28 months with the 6 year contract.

I've been out of the military for a long time. Isn't there such a thing as time in grade and time in service? I know there was in the Army...

I was a E4 with 5 years in the Army when I transferred into the air guard. I had a fresh out of tech school A1C process me into the unit. He became a E5 before I did.

How times change! When I went in, '79, we made SrA (E-4) in about three years and Sgt E4 just before our time for ETS. Making SSgt in 4 was very rare. Seems to me as if there is no longer any experience necessary to make rank. From one extreme to another I guess.

I had to chase E-4 back in the 80's. When I made SSgt it was 18%, and TSgt was 7%. I doubt that you made rank under those percentages, so why would you want it harder for those that come after you? If your a SSgt, then you should have SSgt responsibilities no matter how easy/early you made it.

How can an E-1 go to E-4 in a year when it takes 3 years to go from E-1 to E-4 unless you go BTZ which knocks it down to 30 months. But Active AF is promoting people way to fast now and moving them out of jobs way to fast. A 2-3 year airman is training new airmen because they think NCOs shouldn't work now.

When did TIG go out? I had to wait 36 months for SrA but now you get in 12/24? You need TIG to learn to be that rank or you will never be a good supervisor of that rank. Sad state of affairs USAF has become....
