When selected for Drill SGT, how in-depth is the background check? If my credit is low, will this affect anything?

When selected for drill SGT I know there’s a background check. How in depth is this and if my credit is low will this affect anything?

You're being reviewed for a "Position of Trust". It's not a financial background check. It's a check of SHARP, Law Enforcement, and EEO databaases to ensure you are ok with being around the sons and daughters of Americas future

I am working on improving credit from past mistakes, being young and dumb but was told from a few people and doing some research they will check credit reports so was worried about that! Thank you

SSG (Join to see) clearances require a background check, I don't think you need a secret clearance to be a drill sergeant

Your credit score has really nothing to do with your background check. Unpaid bad debt could disqualify you. If you do have any, just call the creditors and make payment arrangements with them. It doesn’t matter the amount or how fast you repay as long as you’re showing effort.

Everything I have is current, just built up some CC debt and of course my vehicle. I just wasn’t sure what to expect since they’ve implemented the credit check in the last few years.

You Can Believe This Or Not, But I Just Got My First Credit Card A Few Months Ago. Other Than My Shell Oil Card For Gasoline, Which I've Had Since 1983. . But Only Because I Need It To Make Purchases On-Line. ........ I'm A 78 Years Of Age Retired Business Owner. (Retired At 56.) One Afternoon I Received A Call From Dunn & Bradstreet--- They're a Business Credit Reporting Service----.. I Had Applied For Credit For Supplies For My New Print Shop, Here In Vegas, And The Company Wanted A Credit Report Before Approval. And They Had A Few Questions .... Such As Whom Had I Borrowed Any Substantial Amounts Of Money From, Etc. .. About 2 Weeks Later They Called Again & Asked If I'd Ever Used Any Other Names; I Responded, "No, Why"?.. He Said, "We've Gone As Far Back In Your Credit History As Possible, Only To Discover You've NEVER Made A Late Payment In Your Life... Personal OR Business, Does That Make Any Sense To You?" "No Credit Problems And No Credit Refusals Either, " I Hadn't Known That But I Always Simply Paid Any Bill Received By The Following Day.... Get Bill, Write Check, Mail Payment,,, .... They Said, "In My Entire Work Life, Here At D&B, We've NEVER Seen Credit So Absolutely VACANT Of Credit History Late Payments, EVER. & I've Been Doing This Job For About 22 Years...."

Low credit doesn’t necessarily mean bad credit. Unless you are in significant debt that would pose a major concern I wouldn’t worry about it.
I have seen folks get flagged for finances while applying for independent duty or losing their clearance but it has to be significant debt. Just keep doing your thing and toy should be fine

Been out since 1999, so I can't say for sure... but if it's bad, then there's probably not enough time to do much about it. Nevertheless, you really do need to work on raising your score because it can work against you in many other ways outside of DSS.

First Of All, After My Military Service, I Eventually Went Into Business.. Operated Them For About 27 Years & Retired At 56....
Came To Vegas After A Year of Vacationing In Central America.. Got Bored Because People Of My Age Were Still Working; So I Opened Another Shop Here In Vegas, Place A Nice Size Order With The Local Supplier But They Needed A Credit Report.... (Let Me Shorten This).
I Was Approved Almost Immediately And Then Received A Call From Dunn & Bradstreet (A Business Credit Reporting Service). I Wasn't Aware Of This Until Told To Me By D&B....... In My Entire Life, I'd NEVER Made A Late Payment And Most Loans Paid Off In Advance Of Due Dates... They Wanted Me To Confirm Their Findings As They'd Never Seen A Credit Report With Absolutely NO Credit Violations ....Is That A Shocker Or What?. And, Up Til Then, I Had NO Idea. .. And Not A CLUE How Or Why It Happened.

I'm Not Too Sure About The Military's Opinion, But As A Business Owner for 27 Years It Bothered Me If Someone Was Having Financial Problems Because It Indicates A Lack Of Financial Responsibilities & Therefore, May Be A Financial Risk For My Companies.......
