This is a concern that I had in my last government related organization however, we were surprised by the lack of seeing the potential of the threat. I talked to a SME on the IRA who said that they had encountered this during the Troubles as they employed countermeasures against RC plane. Now we have advanced the technology with the addition of enhanced visuals, gps capability and programming flights without the need for a pilot being involved during operations. The IC has brought this issue up but if we see a major attack or assassination of a key leader occurring using these advanced aviation delivery systems, I would imagine that the IC would be thrown under the bus as not providing any warning.

A drone is capable of autonomous flight, navigation, and landing, by definition. This was not a drone. Poor media reporting, and lack of knowledge in general perpetuate the nonfact that a quadcopter is a drone. It is a hobby aircraft, NOT a drone, and requires an operator at all times.

WO1 Bergevine, don't expect the media to know the difference, they will tend to lump things together with broader terms. Their job is to sell newspapers, get people to their website or listen to their news reports. Amazon is using the term drone when they are really talking about the quadcopters so everyone is adopting that to mean drone.

However, the technology as a whole is exploding at such a rate that threat networks are using RCs, quadcopters, UAV and other small bodied aviation capabilities to deliver illegal goods. Here are some articles that are particularly disturbing:
